ALFRED ALEXANDER COLLEDGE, 0F LE MARS, IOWA, ASSIGNOR, TO HENRY W. KLINKERFUES, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
BUCKLE AND LOOP.
Application filed October 28, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. CoLLnneE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Le Mars, in the county of Plymouth and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Combined Buckle and Loop, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined buckle and loop for use in connection with wearing apparel, especially'overalls; and the device is designed to provide an adjustable and readily disengageable connection between the suspender strap of the overalls and the body of the garment.
The object of my invention is the provision of a device of the character described, simple in construction, readily manufactured at moderate cost, readily attached to the garment in the first instance, and neat, safe and effective in use.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which,-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing my device in use. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the device as it appears while being applied to a button, the button stem appearing in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the combined buckle and loop. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the button loop part of the device. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the strap-securing device.
As illustrated in the drawings, 4: is the suspender strap of a pair of overalls, 5 the waistband and 6 the body part of the garment. To the waistband 5 is secured a button 19 having a shank 20.
The frame part of my improved device, which is preferably formed from one piece of metal, has at one end a strap loop with a straight cross bar 7 and downwardly and inwardly inclined arms 8. Adjacent the lower ends of the arms 8 are provided bearings in the form of outwardly turned journal portions 9 disposed in alinement with each other as shown in Fig. 2. Adjacent the journals 9 the two sides of the frame are curved sharply downward and inward at 10, 10, and then extend straight inward toward each other at 11, 11. At 11 the sides of the frame are bent abruptly downward and outward so as to form the bowed portions 12, 1.2. At the lower ends of the bowed portions 12, the sides of the frame are bent abruptly outward at 13, 13, and extending downward Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915.
Serial No. 728,102.
and outward from these bends are straight portions 14, 1 1, which extend downwardly and outwardly and which are joined by bends 16, 16, with the inwardly turned end parts 17, 17, each of which terminates in an eye 18. Each of the eyes 18 encircles the adjacent straight part of the opposite side of the frame so as to form a slidable connection therewith as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4.
In connection with the buckle loop 1 provide a strap securing device which, in the construction shown, consists of a bar 21 of sheet metal having tongues 23, integral with it, and bearing leaves 24, also integral with it. The bar 21 with its tongue and bearing leaves may conveniently be stamped from a single piece of sheet metal as will be understood from Fig. 5. The bar and its accompanying parts being thus formed, the bearing leaves 24 are bent around the journal portions 9 so that the bar 21 extends across from one of the journal portions 9 to the other as indicated in Fig. 2, the tongues 23 extending upwardly so as to engage the up-' perv horizontal portion of the buckle loop.
The bends 13 normally occupy predetermined relative positions in which these bends are disposed close together, being so held by the spring pressure of the parts with which they are integrally connected, the entire frame part being made preferably from a single piece of spring wire. Whenever the bends 13 are forced apart however, the eyes 18 which encircle the portion 17 as above described execute slight sliding movements relatively to the said portions, and upon being released they return to their normal positions.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the eyes 18, guide the portions 17 and the bends 13 whenever these bends are sprung apart. It will also be noted that the device is made of two pieces, one being ordinarily a frame formed from a single piece of spring wire, the other being the bar provided with tongues and with hearing members as shown in Fig. 5.
The operation of my device is as follows: In order to connect the device with the suspender 4, the tongues 23 are swung slightly away from the upper portion of the buckle loop and the lower end of the suspender is threaded between the cross bar 7 of the buckle loop and the adjacent sharp ends of the tongues 23. The suspender is now drawn a sufiicient distance past the tongues, after which the end of the suspender is threaded downwardly between the bar 21 and the straight portions 11. A little pull being now exerted upon the lower end of the suspender, the tongues are thrust through the suspender as indicated in Fig. 1.
In order to support the overalls, the button 19 is drawn upwardly and passed between the bends 12 so that the shank 20 of the button is between and slightly above the bends 13. A slight downward pressure being now applied to the button, the shank 20 forces the bends l3 slightly apart, and in so doing causes the eyes 18 to slide somewhat on the portions 17 extending through them. In other words, as indicated in Fig. 2, the eyes 18 slightly approach each other as the shank 20 of the button passes downwardly between the bends 18 and into the open loop formed by the portions 14 and 17. The button shank being thus lodged in position, the
spring members above described assume their normal positions and the button is held securely in place.
While the button loop of the frame clasps the stem of the button securely by reason of the resilience of the frame, the parts can readily be separated by forcing the button upward so that its stem engages the retaining bends 13 and springs the sides of the frame apart so as to release the button; and thereupon the head of the button may be withdrawn between the bowed parts 12 of the frame.
It will be observed on referring to Fig. 1 that the construction of the device is such that in use the lower loose end of the suspender strap 1 can be passed from the front to the rear side of the frame so as to extend down within the waistband and body of the garment. Obviously this arrangement of the .end of the suspender strap is possible whether the button is on the inside or the outside of the waistband of the garment. This feature of the device is of great practical importance because overalls are largely worn by workmen employed around machinery where any loose, flying or dangling ends of wearing apparel are a source of considerable danger. I believe that I am the first to provide a combined buckle and button loop in which such danger is obviated and a neat, convenient and thoroughly effective fastening provided.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown as changes may be made in the form of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, the scope of my invention being commensurate with my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;

6. In a combined buckle and loop, the combination of a frame made of a single piece of spring wire having its middle part shaped to form at one end of the frame a buckle loop adapted to receive a strap and its tWo end parts slidably connected and shaped to form a resilient button loop adapted to receive and yieldingly hold the shank of a button, and a strap-securing device on the frame adjacent the buckle loop.
