UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. DEAOON, OF SORAN'ION, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUFF HOLDER AND ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,518, dated February 14, 1882.
Application filed June 27, 1881 (ModeL) I I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. DEACON, of Scranton, Lackawanna county, Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and Improved Device for Holding and Adjusting Cuffs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective View, showing the application of my improved device. Fig. 2 is asectional View.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts.
My invention has for its object to provide improved means for holding and adjusting the stiff detachable cuffs now generally worn by ladies and gentlemen, whereby the inconvenience and labor of buttoning and unbuttoning the cliffs are avoided, and thelatter areenabled to be worn. a much longer time because of the preservation, intact of their button holes.
To this end my invention consists in theimproved device which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A represents a clasp, consisting of a jaw, a, having ears or lugs a, and a co-operating jaw, (t having ears a the two being pivoted together by means of a pivot, b, passing through their said ears and upset at its ends, as shown. The outer ends of the jaws are bent inward at right angles and overlap each other, and they are kept normally closed or overlapped by means ofa spring, 0, consisting of a thin flat plate of springy metal bent back on itself, so as to embrace the pivot b and bear with its, opposite ends on the rear portions ofthe twojaws, as shown. In order to prevent the, spring from working out from between the 0 jaws, the jaw a is provided with a guard, d, in
'1. I somewhat extend the under jaw, (0 and form a shoulder or bend, a", upon it, and then insert it through a socket, cl, secured to a flexible band, 0, passed about the arm of the wear- Oue part of the clasp-spring passes into the socket and is slightly compressed, and
when the bend or shoulder a engages with the edge of the socket on the opposite side it is held so engaged by the expansion of the spring. By disengaging the shoulder a from the edge of the socket the clasp can be removed. The elastic band is secured by an adjustable fastening,f, of the form shown or of any other approved form.
By my improved device the cuffs are secure ly held in proper position when used, and are enabled to be readily put on and taken 0% without injury to their button-holes.
I claim as my invention The clasp A, having one ofitsjaws extended rearward and provided with the bend or shoulder a, and having also the spring 0, in combination with the socket and the band on which the socket is secured, said band being adapted to pass around the arm of the wearer, and the whole arrangedto operate substantially as described.
HENRY E. DEAOON.
