W. O. T. HANSEN. CONVERTIBLE TRUNK.
Ill/611107 Patented Apr. 16,1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. T. HANSEN, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
CONVERTIBLE TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,532, dated April 16, 1895, Application filed October 29, 1894. Serial No. 527,103- (llo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. T. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Trunks; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to convertible trunks and my special object is to make one convertible intoa sofa, the unsightly trunk being thus changed into an article both useful and ornamental in appearance.
This invention is especially valuable to those who receive company in their bed-rooms.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a perspective view of the trunk, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the same as a sofa, and Fig. 3, a detail view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the catch-box.
In the drawings, A represents a trunk which may be of any suitable form, material or construction, B the body thereof, and O the truehinged cover, the latter being upholstered on the upper side and provided with the curtain 0' arranged to conceal-the vtrunk from view. On the rear side of this ordinarily hinged cover, I attach a rigid back 0 to the upper edge of which is hinged a flat sofa-back D of the same dimensions as the cover to fold back into a perpendicular position and in the same plane with the upright back 0. On each side of pi'ece D is hinged aplain flap (1 and on the front a flap d which has the right angled flanges (1 d The flap 0i receives, in the holes d d the spring latches c on the cover 0, the latter being secured to the body B by any suitable lock.
E E are braces which keep the piece or sofa back D fromfalling forward. They are connected with the true cover 0 by the turnkeys K K and catch boxes L L while they are secured to the sofa back D by the end-eyes F, nuts G and screws I-I.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
l. A trunk having an upholstered lid or cover 0 with a rigid back c at right angles thereto, in combination with a sofa back D hinged to the back a, the sideflaps d d hinged to back D and the top-flap 01 having the upturned flanges d d whereby said trunk may be converted into a sofa as set forth.
2. The braces E E having a turnkey K at one end and an eye F at the other end, the nuts and screws G H, and the catch boxes L L, all combined with a trunk-cover and sofa back as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM C. T. HANSEN.
Witnesses:
