Description

CATHARINE L. TRESIZE,
TRUNK.
No.175,ZO8. Patented March 21,1876.
WITNESSES IWVEJV'TOR Md: 7 I 42 W .Att army UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
CATHARINE L. TRESIZE, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,208, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O. L. TRESIZE, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Bureau-Trunks and I do hereby declare the following to be a fu1l,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved bureau-trunk. Fig. 2 represents the trunk with the lid closed and the front section of the trunk removed. Fig.3 shows the trunk with the trays and drawers exposed to view.
My invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts of a bureau-. trunk, which will more fully appear from the following description, and clearly pointed out in the claim.
A is the trunk, and is preferably provided with the ordinary top tray B. The lid 0 of the trunk may also be secured to the lockrail D in any suitable manner. The lower edge of the removable front E is provided with bolts a a, two or more, and said bolts engage in metallic sockets c c, secured to the bottom of the trunk.
The front E may be secured to the ends -F F by the hasp-and-staple fastening, as shown, or hasps and ordinary locks may be substituted therefor, if desired.
The drawers G G are furnished with locks,
the drawer G being secured to the lock-rail D, while the lower drawer G is locked to the cross-rail H. The lock-rail D and cross-rail H are firmly secured to the ends F F by T or L braces, so that the trunk may withstand the hard usage usually to be encountered in traveling.
One or more drawers may be used, or shelves may be substituted therefor, without departing from the spirit of my invention. The rear side I of the removable front E is recessed to receive the knobs b of the drawers G G.
A trunk thus constructed may have its contents completely protected while in transit, and by the simple removal of its front it is transformed into a complete bureau, when the tray and drawers are secured by independent locks.
As the cover and front are secured by independent locks, the trays can be inspected and articles removed therefrom Without disturbing or unlocking the front of the trunk, which is secured by locks to each end of the trunk. 7
When it is desired to transform the trunk into a bureau, the front is removed, and the trays may be then kept open or looked, as desired, thereby allowing of two independent compartments in the trunk, which are gov-l erned by independent locks.
'Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bureau-trunk, having a cover, 0, adapted to be locked to the lock-rail D, and a single removable front, E, provided with locking mechanism, whereby it may be secured to the ends of the trunk, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of February, 1876.
