SAD-IRON.

SPECIFICATION fbrming part of Letters Application filed May 9, 1891.

To all wh om it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ONAH J MARKLEY, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

I will describe a sad-iron embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly sectional, of a sad-iron embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the iron proper. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the detachable handle for the iron proper, showing the locking-lugs and bolt; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the iron proper, it being a casting to a desired size and outline and provided on its upper surface with a rectangular recess 2. This recess is covered with a plate 3, secured to the iron 1 in a convenient manner, said plate 3 being provided with two apertures or perforations 4 and 5 near its respective ends, for a purpose presently set forth.

A spring 6, preferably of the character shown, is mounted within the recess 2 of the iron 1 This spring at 011e end is rigidly secured to the iron and at its other end is provided with a slot 7, working about a stud 8 to permit of sufficient play of the spring, for a purpose presently made clear.

9 is a handle for manipulating the iron proper, and may be of any desired construction, a good form being shown in the drawings, which permits of the fastening thereto of a locking-plate 10 by long screws or the like 11, which pass vertically into the handle a considerable distance, as shown, imparting additional strength to the handle against breakage. This plate 10 has two depending locking- lugs 12 and 13, adapted to enter the holes 4 and 5 of the plate 3. These lugs 12 and 13. are preferably slightly inclined as to their upper face portion in the manner shown in the drawings, which adapts them to readily slide under and engage with the plate 3 at the holes 4 and 5. A spring-controlled bolt 14, provided with a knob 15, is mounted in a housing 16 therefor, the latter preferably attached to the handle in a convenient manner or made a part of the plate 3, the office -of said bolt being to enter the recess 2 in the Patent No. 458,402, dated August 25, 1891.

Having now described the construction of a sad-iron embodying my invention, the manner of locking and unlocking the handle with the iron proper is as follows: The bolt 14 is raised by means of its knob 15 and the lugs 12 and 13 caused to enter the holes 4 and 5 in the plate their full extent, at which time they engage the plate 3 at said holes and also the spring G, which serves to keep the lugs in close contact with the plate and prevent rattling or play of parts, and simultaneously the bolt 14 enters the hole 5 in the plate 3 over the recess 2 in the iron 1 immediately to the rear of the lug 13 and locks the parts against displacement. the handle from the iron proper, it is only necessary to raise the bolt14 by means of its knob 15, when the lugs 12 and 13 can readily be removed from under the plate 3.

My device as thus constructed is cheap and durable, has easy means of locking and unlocking the handle to the iron proper, and avoids the rattling noise incidentto loose contact or play of parts.

I desire it understood that I do not Wish to restrict my invention to the exact construction of parts shown or described, but may vary the principle of my invention without departing from the true scope thereof.

I claim- In a sad-iron, the iron proper provided with a recess in its upper surface, a perforated plate covering said recess, a detachable handle therefor provided with a plate having depending locking-lugs adapted to engage with the perforated plate, a spring-controlled bolt on said handle-plate immediately next a lockin g-lug and adapted to entera perforation in the plate, and a spring in said recess adapted to engage said lugs and keep them in close contact with the plate covering the recess, as described.
