4 Claims. (CI. 38-92) This invention relates to improvements in sadirons and is concerned particularly withelectric irons of the handle folding or removing type adapted for compact storage during travel.
The principal object of the invention is to avoid the disadvantages. of prior. folding or: travel. electric irons, amongthem, the provision. of bulky andunstable handle hinges and clasps and the lateral offset of the handle beyond the iron when in folded position, and in general to provide an improved device of extremely simple construction and arrangement of parts.
A more particular object of the invention is to provide a sadiron and handle construction wherein the handle is adapted to be rigidly and securely engaged to the iron when the latter is in use but readily removed from the iron for compact storage assembly during periods of non-use.
A specific object of the invention is the novel provision of magnetic means for securement of the handle to the sadiron.
The invention further contemplates the provision of plug and socket connections between the handle and the iron to prevent lateral displacement of the handle and cooperating magnet means to prevent upward disengagement of the handle until dismantlement is desired.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed explanation, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein preferred embodiment of the principles of the invention have been selected for exemplification.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals refer to like parts, in all forms of the invention are shown a sole plate 10, a magnetically attractable cover plate 12 secured thereto and a handle 14 having attaching legs or leg 16. The sole plate may be provided with a suitable electric heating element and the usual current conduit connections, not shown. It is to be understood that the particular forrn and construction of the sole plate 10, the cover plate 12, and the handle 14 and legs 16 are in general immaterial insofar as related to the present invention which is primarily concerned With the novel handle connection means now to be described.
The handle connection as shown in Figs. 1 and la comprises a recessed or pocket portion 18 formed in the upper surface of the cover plate 12, one for each of the legs 16.
States Patent Suchv portions 18are for the reception of magnetic members 20, preferably of cross-sectional configuration similar to thatof the recesses 18, which depend from the lower ends of the legs 16 and are secured thereto in any suitable manner such as by the screws 22, as shown. It will be apparent that the handle 14. is thus rigidly secured to the cover plate 12 by magnetic attraction and by engagement of adjacent shoulders of the magnet 29 and socket 18.
A somewhat similar arrangement is shown in the form of .theinvention illustrated in Figs. 2 and 2a. Here, instead of the. pressed or formed pocket or socket 18 shown in-Figs. 1 and 1a, the upper surface of the cover plate 12 may remain planar and. is provided with sockets in the form of apertures 24 for reception of the reduced end portions 26 of, magnets 28 which in turn depend from the lower ends of the legs 16 and are secured thereto such as by screws 30. The handle 14 is thus firmly secured to the cover plate. 12 by magnetic attraction of the lower shoulder portions of the magnetZSfor the contacting surface portions of the cover plate 12. and by the further magnetic attraction. and engagement-of the side wall of the reduced end portion 26 with the surrounding Wall of the apertured socket 24.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 3a, the magnetic members 32 may be housed within recesses provided in the lower end portions of legs 16 and, if desired, may be molded therein, the sloped sidewall portions thereof, as shown, assuring locking engagement. This form of the invention, as opposed to the preceding modifications, provides for recessed sockets 34 formed in the depending ends of legs 16 for the reception of metallic plug members 36 carried by and projecting upwardly of the cover plate 12. It will be apparent that the upper surface of the plug 36 is magnetically held against the magnet 32 and that the handle 14- is further held in firm engagement with the cover plate by engagement of the adjacent sidewalls of the plug and recess 34.
The forms of the invention above described are illustrative only of many other specific forms which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art and which it is not necessary here to describe in detail. It is intended, in all forms of the invention, that the handle 14, when the iron is to be folded or dismantled for storage purposes, may be manually pulled outwardly of the plug and socket connections provided if the magnetic elements will permit or, as is often desirable, the socket members may be provided of somewhat greater transverse area than the plug members so that the handle 14 may be turned downwardly toward the iron in the usual folding hinge action until it becomes disengaged from the cover plate. In some cases it may not be desirable entirely to detach the handle from the iron and thus the invention also contemplates the additional provision of conventional transverse axis hinges or other flexible securing means in which cases the particular connecting means herein shown and described may becomes auxiliary securing means for rigidly holding the handle to the iron when in use. Furthermore, while the handles 14 as herein shown are reversible as to forward and rearward ends, it will be understood that this is a limiting factor of the invention which contemplates that the handles may take any other desired form and that diiferent forms of connections may be provided for the different ends thereof, if desired.
As to the magnetic members, such as shown at 29, 23 and 32, it is preferred that these be of aluminum-nickelcobalt alloy or other so-called permanent magnet type. The invention, however, embraces within its purview the use of magnet means of any character suitable for the attaching function intended.
I claim:
1. In a folding electric sadiron having a sole plate and a magnetizable cover casing therefor, a handle of insulat- Patented- Oct. 91,. 19:56.-
ing material for said sadiron having front and rear legs, a
permanent type magnetic plug member secured to the bottom of each of said legs and extending therefrom, and sockets mating with the said plugs formed in the said cover plate receiving the said magnetic plug members for detachably securing said handle to said cover casing, the said sockets having bottom and sidewall portions for magnetic engagement with adjacent portions of said plug members.
2. In a folding electric sadiron having a sole plate and a magnetizable cover casing therefor, a handle of insulating material for said sadiron having front and rear legs, a permanent type magnetic plug member having a reduced end portion secured to the bottom of each of said legs and extending therefrom, and sockets formed in the said cover casing receiving the reduced end portions of said magnetic plug members for detachably securing said handle to said cover casing, the said sockets and the adjacent surface of said cover casing being in magnetic engagement with the adjacent portions of said plug members.
3. In a folding electric sadiron having a sole plate and a magnetizable cover casing therefor, a handle of insulating material for said sadiron having front and rear legs, a recessed socket in the bottom portion of each of said legs, a permanent type magnetic member secured in the upper portions of said sockets and magnetizable plug members mating with said sockets carried by said cover casing and projecting into said sockets for detachably securing said handle to said cover casing, the said plug members being in magnetic engagement with said magnetic plug members.
4. In a folding electric sadiron having a sole plate and a cover casing therefor, a handle for said sadiron having a downwardly extending leg, plug and plug mating socket means disposed between the extended end of said leg and said cover casing for detachably securing said handle to said sadiron, a permanent type magnetic member and a magnetizable member included in said plug and socket means and the said members being in magnetic engagement.
