UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM QUEEN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN H. BUTTER, OF SAME PLACE.
GUARD FOR COMPANION WAYS OR HATCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,131, dated August 18, 1891.
Application filed September 9, 1890. Serial No. 364,443. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM QUEEN, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Guards for Companion Ways or Hatches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in providing the companion way or hatch of a vessel with a sliding and a pair of folding barred doors situated within the wooden ones, and in combining with the said barred doors a chain or an equivalent device whereby the same may be secured together from the inside to prevent the entrance of thieves when the Wooden doors are left open for the purpose of ventilation.
In the further description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a front View of a companion-way with the doors open and showing the guard in position to prevent the entrance of unauthorized persons. Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a section of Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line :0 as. Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 2, taken on the dotted line y y. Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line .2 2, but showing the wooden doors closed.
Referring to the drawings, A is the com panion-way leading to the cabin, and B B are the doors of the same.
0 is the roof of the cabin, and D the roof of the companion-Way. The shutter which closes the opening E in the top of the covering of the companion-way or the roof 0 is denoted by F. The shutter has a downward projection G, having tongues a, which rest in grooves b in the side pieces H. By this means. the shutter may be slid backward and forward to open and close the opening E. 4
I is a grating, formed of the rods 0 and the cross-pieces d. This grating is adapted to slide on the bars J, which are held to the sides of the companion-way by means of eyes 6, and it is situated under the shutter F. The other part of the guard consists of the folding grated doors L, the meeting edges of which look by lapping, as in ordinary doors, and the looking or outer door is'provided with an eye f, which as the doors are closed registers with a similar eye g on the sliding shutter-grating L.
A padlock may be used to secure the different parts of the guard together from the outside.
To hold the whole together from the inside a chain N is attached to an eye It, passed around the last of the cross-pieces of the shutter-grating, around the locking door, and returned to a hook 1'.
I claim as my inventio'n- In a companion-way, a pairof folding grated doors supplementary to the ordinary wooden ones, combined with a sliding grated shutter in the roof of the companion-waysupplemental to the ordinary wooden shutter, and a looking device to secure the grated doors and the grated shutter together in a closed position, substantially as specified.
'WILLIAM QUEEN.
