UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
PHILIP LAUBENBERGER, OF BROOKLYN, NEN YORK.
GUARD FOR SAFE-LOCKS.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,346, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed December 7, 1882. (No model.)
i To all whom it may con-corn Be it known thati,P11rL1P LAUBENBERG-ER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Guards for the Dial-Plates of Combination Safe-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improvement, with the knob removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken'through the line as m, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to cover and protect the dial-plates of combination safelocks when the owner desires to prevent others knowing the combination from opening the safes.
A represents the door of a safe. B is the knob of the combination-lock, and U is the dial-plate. D are two semicircular plates, which are so formed as to cover the dial-plate ot' a combination safe-lock, While their outer edges rest against the safe-door. In the center of the adjacent edges of the plates D are formed semicircular recesses E to receive the neck of the knob B,'as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Upon thepla-tes D, atone end of theirstraight edges, are formed lugs F, the outer ends of which are so formed as to overlap, and are hinged to each other, so that the two plates can be swung apart to allow them to be placed upon and removed from the knob B and the dial-plate G.
If desired, the hinge-pivot of the lugsF can be extended and attached to the safe-door A, so as to permanently connect the said plates with the said door.
Upon the ends of the plates D, opposite the hinged lugs F, are formed, or to them are attached, eyes G, in such positions that the arm ot'a padlock, H, can be readily passed through them. With this construction, when the guard D has been applied it will be impossible for any one to see the dial-plate G and unlock the safe without first removing the said guard.
If desired, the guard can be so formed as to cover both the dial-plate and the knob of the safe-lock.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A guard for dial-plates of combination safelocks, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of two semicircular plates provided with a hinge at one end and eyes at the other end to receive a padlock, as set forth.
PHILIP LAUBENBERGER.
