NICHOLAS OVERFIELD, OF ROGKAWAY BEACH, NEW YORK.
lMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE BATHlNG-HOUSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,748, dated April 23, 1878; application filed March 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS OVERFIELD, of Rockaway Beach, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Bathing- Houses, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of one of my improved bathing-houses, taken through the line .10 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3is a detail section of one of the uprights and hoops.

The object of this invention is to furnish bathing-houses which shall be so constructed that they may be readily taken down and adjusted in compact form, for removal or storage, and which at the same time shall be simple in construction, and may be readily ventilated, as required.
The invention consists in the combination of the platform, the hoops, the detachable uprights, the clamping-screws, and the canvas cover with each other; in the combination of the pivoted bows and their canvas cover with the upper hoop of the bathing-house; and in the combination of the hinged standards, the hinged seat, and the hooks and eyebolts with the base-platform and the uprights, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the base-platform or foundation of my improved bathing-house, in which, near its edge, are formed sockets to receive the lower ends of the uprights B. To the outer sides of the uprights B are attached hoops O by meansof hand-screws D, which passthrough short vertical slots in the said uprights B, and screw into the said hoops O, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, so that the said hoops may be adjusted higher or lower, as may be required.
To the outer edge of the platform A, and to the outer sides of the hoops G, is attached canvas E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At the front of the house the intermediate hoops O are cut away between the two front uprights B to form a doorway, which is closed by a door, F, hinged to one of said uprights, and secured to the other by a lock. The door F is formed by attaching canvas to a rectangular frame, the bars of which are secured to each other at the corners by hand-screws D, as shown in Fig. 1. A portion of the platform is cut away, and is replaced by a grating, to allow water to readily escape.
To the rear part of the platform A are hinged short uprights G, to the upper ends of which is hinged the forward part of the seat H. To the rear edge of the seat H are attached hooks I, to hook into the eyes of eyebolts J, attached to the rear uprights B.
To the side parts of the upper hoop G are hinged the ends of a number of bows, K, to which is attached a canvas cover, L, the edges of which are secured to the said hoop G by knobs and eyelets or other convenient means, so that the top of the bathing-house may be opened for ventilation in front or rear, as may be required.
By this construction, when not required for use, or upon the approach of a storm, the seat H may be unhooked and folded down upon the platform A, the screws D may be taken out, and the uprights B removed, allowing the hoops O and the canvas attached to them to settle down upon the platform A, so that the bathing-house can be readily moved and may be readily stored.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the platform A, the hoops (J, the detachable upright-s B, the clamping-screws D, and the canvas covering E with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the pivoted bows K and their canvas cover L with the upper hoop C of the bathing-house A B C E, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of the hinged standards G, the hinged scat H, and the hooks and eyebolts I J with the base-platform A and the uprights B, substantially as herein shown and described.
NICHOLAS OVERFIELD.
