UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLTS CHANDLER, OF SELKIRK, MISSdURT.
FLOOD-FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,333, dated September 8, 1896.
Application filed September 20, 1894. Serial No. 523,858. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIs CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ridgewood, in the county of Laclede and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flood-Fences, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention has relation to flood-fences; and the object is to provide a simple, durable, and practical fence of this class; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and ntrtieularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved flood-fence. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the stationary stay-plate detached from the fence. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the hinges used in the construction of the fence, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fence as it ap pears in operation.
1 1 represent rigid posts driven firmly in the ground, and in line with and between said posts is fixed a pointed base-piece 2, to which is secured a post 3 by means of ahinge 4, and on the opposite side from the hinge a stay-plate 5 is rigidly secured to the basepiece 2, its upper end projecting above said base-piece and forming a stay or brace for the hinged post 3 when it is in an upright position, and at the same time permit said hinged post to give with the flood and assume a horizontal position to allow the floating debris to pass over it.
6 6 are similar pointed base-pieces firmly fixed in the ground, and to each one is secured a post 7 by means of a hinge 4, and each pair of contiguous posts 7 T is connected. by top and bottom rails 8 8, and a continuous wire 9 is laced back and forth through staples 1O 10 on the rails 8 S, to complete the panel. If preferred, in lieu of the continuous Wire 9 a series of pointed slats or palings 13 may be used, as shown in the left-hand side of Figs. 1 and 4.
1t 14 are staples secured to the stationary posts 1 1, which engage pivoted hooks 15 15 on the contiguous hinged posts 7 7, and when so engaged support the fence in an upright position. Similar staples let" 1i are secured to the inner posts 7 7, to which is connected one end of the wire rods 16, the other end of which is secured to similar staples 14 on the hinged post 3, so that said post and the panels move together when acted upon by a flood. 'ihis fence is intended to be located over creeks and streams in the line of main fence, and during the time of freshets the upper part of the fence is released from the stationary posts, and it allows the passage of floating debris without damage to the fence.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A flood-fence, comprising the rigid pointed posts 1 1 provided with staples as set forth, the pivoted base-piece 2 provided with the stationary stay-plate 5, and the post 3 secured to said base-piece 2 by a hinge at on the side opposite the stay-plate, and provided with the staples 14 and the wire rods 16, in combination with the intermediate hinged posts 7 having staples 1i, top and bottom rails 8 8, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIS CHANDLER. \Vitnesses:
R. A. IIORTEL, A. A. TAYNAN.
