IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE- LASTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,800, dated May 17, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, W. G. SHIPHERD, of thc city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Lasts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure l is a side sectional view of a shoe-l last with my improvement applied to it, x x, Fig. 2, indicating the line of section; Fig. 2, a section of the same, taken in theline y y, Fig. I.

This invention relates to'a new and improved mode of attaching the instep-block to the body of the last, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a simple and durable fastening for the purpose specified is obtained, and one which will admit ofthe instep-block being detached from the body of 4fthe last by means of the last-hook, when the latter is applied to the instep-block, for the purpose ot' withdrawing it irom the shoe or boot.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the body or main portion o the last, and B the instep-block of the saine. These parts may be constructed in the usual manner, and therefore do not require a minute description.
To the under side or bottom of the instep block B, at its back end, there is attached a metal plate, O, which projects beyond the back end ot said block, B, and has a hole, a, made in it ot' such diameter as to admit of the end of the last-hook passing through'it, said hook being shown in red outline in Fig. l.
` In the upper surface of the back part ofthe body A of the last there is made a recess, d, at the bottom of which there is attached a metal plate, E, through which a rod, F, passes into the body A. A spiral spring, e, is placed on the rod F, the upper end of said spring bearing against a pin, f, in the rod, and having a tendency to keep the latter forced upward to its fullest extent, as will be seen by referring to Fig. l. The upper end of the rod F is of hook form, or is bent backward, so as to form a bearing-surface for the last-hook,
when the same is passed through the hole c ot' plate G.
Gr is a metal plate, which is attached to the upper surface of the body A of the last, just in front ot' the recess d, said plate G proj eetin g ba ek over the recess and having a slot, g, made longitudinally in it of sufficient Width to receive the hub or protuberance c of the plate D.
To the front end of the instep block B there is 'attached a dowel-pin, h, which ts into a hole, z', in the body of the last. This dewelpin prevents the instep-block B from sliding or slipping laterally on the body A.
The rod F, it will be seen, prevents the instep-block B from casually slipping backward in consequence of the back edge of the plate D bearing against said rod, and in order to detach the block B from A and draw thc former from the latter and out of the shoe the last-hook is passed through the hole a in plate U and made to press down the rod F below the plate D, and then, by pulling back the last-hook, B may be readily withdrawn.
In order to attach B to A, the dowel-pin h is entered in its hole t', and B pressed down with the plate D, bearing on the rod F, the latter being consequently depressed so that the plate D may slip under the plate G, the hub or protuberance c oi" D passing into the slot g.
I would remark that the back end of thc plate D is slightly beveled, so that by turning the latter' it may always be made to bear snugly against the rod F.
rlhis fastening may be cheaply constructed, and it has no parts which are liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, isy The plate D, attached to the under side of the instep-block B, and provided with the hub c, in connection with the slotted plate G, attached to the body A, andthe yielding rod F, all being arranged as shown and used in connection with the plate C, or its equivalent, for connecting the last-hook with the instep-block, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
