CLASP FOR HARNESS-TUGS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 35,995, dated July 29, 1862.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES S. GILMAN, of Tecumseh, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Holding and Adjusting the Tugs and otherl Large Straps in and for Harness; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in passing the tug or strap through a metallic box, left rough or uneven upon the inside of the back, and then passing in front of the same, inserted also into said metallic box a metallic wedge, roughened to correspond with the inequalities on the inner surface behind it, and then holding the tug or strap to its place by means of a screw pressure, applied by passing a screw through the front part of the metallic box, and pressing upon the metallic wedge passing in front of the tug or strap to be thus held in its place.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I make my harness after any of the known patterns, but instead of holding and fastening the tugs and heavy straps by means of buckles, or by any of the methods now known or used for that purpose, and for the sake of preserving more fully the entire strength of the tug or strap, and more easily and more perfectly adjusting or altering the length of the same, I construct the metallic box, being an oblong, fiat metallic box, open at each end, as shown by those parts of the accompanying drawings marked by the letter A. I also make to pass inside of the said box, and over the tug or strap also inserted in said box, a metallic wedge roughened with ribs upon the side placed next to the strap, as shown by those parts of the accompanying drawings marked by the letter B.

Through the front side of the oblong metallic box A, I insert a screw, as marked C, in the accompanying drawings, in a neat firm manner, which being turned down and brought to bear upon the metallic wedge B, passing in front of the tug or strap D, inserted beneath it in the metallic box holds it rmly in its place, and at the same time preserves the full strength of the strap or leather, and also admit of a ready adjust- :ment of the tug or strap, to any desired length, however minute the change of length may be. In one end of the oblong metallic box A, I leave an opening thus forming the metallic loop F, to which one of the tugs or straps is permanently attached.

Vhat I clailn as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The application of a screw pressure to the holding of the tug or large straps, in and for harness, and more readily adjusting the same by means of the screw, metallic box and wedge as shown in the above specifications and the accompanying drawings, or in any other form substantially producing the same results.
