Description
- UNITED STATES PATENT EEIACE.
ARTHUR PELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED GIMLET.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR PELL, ot' the city, county, and State ot New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gimlets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal central section of my invention shown adjusted for the pocket. w, Fig. 2, show the line of section; Fig. 2, a view of the same adjusted for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in having the end ot' the gimlet opposite to that on which the screw 0r boring device is formed provided with a head or knob, having a hole or opening made laterallyT through it, and provided at its inner end with a screw-thread, and using in connection with the ginilet and knob thus formed a tube or case ot' such diameter that it may be fitted in the hole or openingin the knob and made to serve as a handle for the gimlet when the latter is required for use, and also made to receive the gimlet when not required for use, the screw on the inner end of the knob being screwed into an internal or female screw at thecpen end ot' the tube or case.
This invention is intended for a pocket-gimlet, and is more especially designed for skaters who are required to bore holes in the heels ot' their boots and shoes to receive the spur at the back part of the skate.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the shank, and B the boring end, of an ordinary gimlet. These parts may be constructed in the usual way, and therefore do not require a minute description. On the end of the shank A there is tted a metal head or knob, C, which may be of spherical form, and through which there is made laterally a circular hole or opening, a., and at the inner end ot' said knob there is a screw, b. (See Fig. l.) y
D is a tube, the external diameter of which is such as to admit ot' the tube being iitted in the hole or opening c in the knob G, so that said tube may serve as a handle when the gimlet is to be used, (see Fig. 2,) and the internal diameter ot the tube is such that the gimlet may be titted into it when not desired tor use, the screw b, at the inner end ot' the knob C, fitting in a female or internal screw, c, at the open end ofthe tube. (See Fig. 1.) By this arrangement it will be seen that a very simple and convenient pocket-gimlet is obtained, one that may be expeditiously adjusted fornse, and also quickly adjusted for the pocket. The end of the tube opposite to the open end is closed, and the tube and knob may be constructed of brass, white metal, or
any suitable metal composition, or iron. The
gimlet should, of course, be of'steel. I would remark that the tube D may be made slightly taper, in order to prevent it slipping entirely through thc hole or opening a in the knob U. The taper should be such as to cause the tube -to bind in the opening ay at the center of the former. (See Fig. 2.)
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new and improved article of manufacture- A pocket-ginilet composed of the tube D, and a gimlet provided with a head or knob, C, at the end of its shank A, the knob having a hole or opening, a., made through it to receive the tube D, when required, and provided at its inner end with a screw, b', to fit when required into an internal screw, c, in the open end of the tube D, all constructed and arranged as described.
ARTHUR PELL. Witnesses:
M. S. PARTRIDGE, DANIEL ROBERTSON.
