Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
IMPROVED FOLDING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No,l 42, |08, dated March 29, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. G. PAYNE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure] is a side view of my invention Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section of the same, taken through the center.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the twofigures.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction or arrangement of the joint ot' the bed-bottom, whereby the same, with mattresses attached, may be compaetly folded withoutinjuring the mattress, as is the case where an ordinary joint is employed, in consequence of the mattress being bent with a quick curve, which creases the mattress and soon causes it to become chafed and worn.
My invention consists in constructing the joint which connects the two parts of the bedbottom together with a central bar, arranged in such a manner as to admit of the mattress being bent over with a gradual curve, and to cause the mattress to be compactly folded without the liability of injuring the same.
To enable those skilledin the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A A represent two rectangular frames, tothe upper parts of which a mattress, B, is secured by nails a or other proper means.
O represents springs, which are connected to the under side ofthe mattress and to slats b at the bottoms of the frames A A. (See Fig. 2.)
The frames A A are of equal dimensions,
and they are connected together by a joint constructed and arranged as follows:
To each side of each frame A, at the inner surfaces thereof, there are secured metal plates c, which are parallel with the ends of the frames, (see Fig. 2,) and these plates o at each side of the frames are connected by metal plates d, the ends of the latter having pivots c passing through them into the plates c.
When the two frames A A are adjusted in a horizontal position for use, the lower parts of the sides of the frames A A are in contact, as shown at eX in both figures; but the upper parts of said sides above e are recessed or notched, so as to leave a Vshaped space between them, in which V-shaped blocks D are fittedv These V-shaped blocks Dare secured by screws or bolts f to the plates d, and it will be seen that they, in connection with theplates d, form an open joint and admit of a mattress B of a requisite thickness being used, and one which may be turned over and folded compactly together, as shown in red in Fig. 1, without creasing the mattress or subjectin git to an undue abrasion and wear. The joint also is a strong and durable one, and renders the bed-bottom stiff and rm.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
