Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN M. BROWN OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID B. TURN- BULL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED BED-BOTTOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,519, dated March 27, 1856.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN M. BROWN, of Aurora, in the county ot' Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my said invention consists in a novel mode of securing the elastic straps or springs for giving elasticity to the bed to the ends of the slats which forni the bed-bottom, and also in a novel and convenient mode ot' securing or attaching the ends ot' the said elas-V tic straps to the frame of the bedstead in such a manner as to be readily removed or detached when desired.
To enable -those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing` to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side view of my invention, showing a section of the bedstead. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view thereof'.
Similar letters ot' reference in the different figures denote the same parts of my invention.
A represents the frame of the bedstead, being shown in section at the head and footin Fig. 1, and B represents a strip which is secured to the frame A, as shown, by means ot' the screws O, and is of such a shape or configuration as to form a groove or recess between its upper edge and the frame A, as shown.
AD represents a wedge-shaped block, which enters the aforesaid groove, as shown, there being one of said blocks at each end of each of the slats G, being connected thereto by means of the elastic straps E, as hereinafter described. The said elastic straps are secured to the slats G by doubling and inserting, as shown in Fig. 3, in a slot in the end of the slats, which slot, having an enlargement at its end, receives a pin, F, through the fold in the strap E and holds it securelyin place, the said slots being formed between the slats Gr and the piece H secured thereto, as shown. The ends of the elastic straps are then drawn through a mortise or slot in the upper part ofthe block D, when the ends are turned in and fastened together, as shown, and held rmly by passing the pin a through the fold, as shown. Thus the elastic straps form a connection between the slats G and frame A, giving an elastic or springing bottom to the bed, while, by means of the wedge-shaped block D and the groove between the frame A and strip B, the same may be readily removed or detached when desired.
It will be observed that the bearing-surfaces, or those parts upon which the straps E rest or come in contact with, are rounded so as to prevcn t the cutting or wearing ot't'of the straps by any sharp angles, thus rendering the bedbottom very durable.
When the slats G have by use become bent down iu the middle, by removing the pin F a-nd removing the elastic the slat may be turned over and the elastic and pin replaced as before.
lt is obvious that the mode herein described of attaching the springs in forming bed-bottoms may be used with equal advantage in the construction of chairs, sofas, lounges, and other similar articles.
Having described my invention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination ot' the wedge-shaped block D, the elastic strap E, and the slats G, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Securing theelastic strap E to the wedgeshaped block D by passing the strap through the mortise in said block, in the manner shown and described.
O. M. BROWN.
