Description
` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. D. WHITMORE, OF HOUSATONIO, ASSIG-NOR TO E. WV. VAILL, OF VVOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED CAMP STOOL OR CHAIR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,002, dated September 15, 1,863.
T0 all whom it may concern:
down against the legs, by which movement Be it known that I A. D. WHrTMORE, of the legs are shut close against each other and Housatonic, in the county ot' Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement to a camp-stool or folding chair for the purpose of adding a back to the stool or to enable the chair to be folded more compactly; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full explanation and description of my improvement.
'I "o the common four-crossed-legged camp- Stool, with front and back rail connected by carpet or other iiexible bottom, and closing up to each other, I attach to the legs supporting the back rail a back by a hinge secured to the side of the back posts and legs, as shown in the accompanying drawing, or a different style of hinge can be attached to the face of the back posts and legs in such a manner that when the chair is to be opened the back is turned up on this hinge so lar as is necessary, and is then supported by the hinge, and prevented from going over back without side straps or arms, and when the chair or stool is to be closed the front rail of the seat is pressed up to the back rail, the flexible seat dropping down between the same, and the back is then turned forward on this hinge the back as closely to them, thus reducing a chair to the space a stool would occupy.
In the accompanying drawings, A A B B represent two pairs of crossed legs, connected at their upper ends by a seat, C, of carpet or other flexible material. To the upper ends of the legs B B a back, D, is attached by hinges E E, applied externally to the sides or faces of the frame and formed with projecting cheeks e e, by which the pivotsn of the hinges are placed in front of the frame, so that the back, which in its upper position rests and bears directly upon the upper ends of ths legs B, will be rrnly supported against pressure from the front.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the legs A B, seat G, back D, and hinges E e, when the parts are all constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purposes represented and specified.
- A. D. VHITMORE.
In presence of- GEo. E. WHITMORE, A. H. WHITMORE.
