Description
UNITED STATES PATENT @Errea ANTONI ISKE, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED EXTENSION-BEDSTEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,564, dated November 10, 1863.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONI Isxn, of the city of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved mode of constructing convertible extension cribs and bedsteads with or without sideboard adjustment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l shows the bed or crib closed up, with the loose top T laid on, forming in appearance a sideboard or dresser. Fig. 2 shows the same extended, the bedstead or crib attached to the front and rear s l and s 2 ofthe sideboard. Fig. 3 shows the bedstead or crib removed from the sides s l and s 2 extended. Fig. 4 shows the same closed up with back or head-board A inclined outward, forming a lounge or settee.
The object ofthis improvement is to obviate the unsightly appearance of a crib or bedstead in a sitting-room during the day-time, besides economizing the room, as well as to adapt it for children or adults, accordingly as the same is more or less extended from a settee to a c.ib or full-length bedstead. The pivoted crosspieces are not new, having been employed in various devices by myself in my extension-table, iire-escapement, &c.
Fig. 2 show the cross-slats L affixed to a head and foot board, A and P b,Fig. 3, set within the front F and back B of the external sideboard, Fig. 1, held by cleats a a on a crossrail, B l, Pig. 2.
S S show the pins on the edges ofthe sides s 1,1itting into corresponding holes in the edge of the sides s 2.
t, Fig. 2, shows the ledge for supporting the loose top T, Fig. l, when the sides are closed R represents the crossrails, afxed to the folding slats at any desired point for the sup port ofthe mattress. These cross-rails It may be round or dat, as shown by R 2, affixed by means of a screwvpivot in the ends, which will allow them to be turned up edgewise in closing up. These cross-slats may be affixed directly to the front and rear of the sideboard without a separate head or foot board, when desired for a crib or bedstead with the ornamental sideboard adjustment. By aiiixing the cross-slats L to a head-board, A, by means of a movable pin entering the slotted plates K, of which there is one to each post or side of the dresser, in which the heads of the slats slide up and down in extending` or closing the slats. By withdrawing the pins above, the head-board A can be inclined outward and heldin that position by the toothed or ratchet plate o, Fig. A; or, by atlixing the head-board A by means oi' hinges on the cross rail, similarly as shown by the footboard F b, it can be inclined independently oi' the posts P l and P 2, and ai'tixing the ratchet-plate o onto the post P l to secure it when so inclined. As all the cross-rails form a level seat, when closed, as shown in Fig. 4, it answers for a settee or lounge adapted for convalescents, and readily convertible into a bedstead.
The drawings show the construction, and the operation and various adjustments are readily understood and require no further description.
As intimated, I do not claim the cross-slas L, held bypivots at thosepoints, as shown, but rather their application, when used in the manner and for the purpose shown, connected with the head and foot board, or in place thereof' the front and rear sideboard casing, or both combined, as set' t'orth. ln other words,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The employment of pivoted cross slats L, in combination with the head and foot board of a bedstead, A and F b, or their equivalent, the front and rear portions of a sideboard, B and F, with their sides s l and s 2, and loose top T, made and arranged substantially as shown, with the slotted plates K.
2. The ratchet 0, in combination with the aftixed or hinged headboard A, cross-slats L, and rails Pt, when arranged substantially in the manner shown, for the purpose specied.
ANTONi ISKE.
