Description

I (NoModelJ S. H. TQLES.
COMBINED BACK BAND BUCKLE AND. TRACE CARRIER. No. 383,782. Patented May 29, 1888.
NITED STATES ATENT Fries.
SAMUEL H. Tones, OF ROSENDALE, MISSOURI.
COMBINED BACK-BAND BUCKLE AND TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,782, dated May 29, 1888.
Application filed April 2, 1888. Serial No. 269,363. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. ToLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosendale, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Back-Band Buckle and Trace-Carrier; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in back-band buckles and trace-holders; and it has for its object to improve upon previous constructions of this character, and to provide a simple and cheap combined back-band buckle and trace-holder.
The novelty of the present invention resides in the peculiarities of construction and the combinations, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
This deviceis designed to be attached to the back part of the harness, as similar devices of a like character, and it is thought that its application will be readily understood, and hence it is not shown in the drawings as applied to the harness; but said drawings clearly illustrate the construction of the device, Figure 1 being a perspective view, with the back and hip straps indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a similar section taken at right angles to that of Fig. 2.
Referring to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the combined buckle and trace-holder, the construction of which is as follows: The base portion a is substantially tion is provided with a transverse strip, B, the lower face of which is flush with the bottom face of the base portion; but its upper face is cut away to form the recess d, the bottom of which is flush with the bottom of the apertures b in the base portion. This materially decreases the weight of the buckle and provides room for the strap D, so as to avoid bunching in the interior of the buckle. .The strap 0 in the base portion is at right angles to the strap D, and finds a bearing on the raised portionsfof the cross strip B.
F is a projection or pin rising from the transverse strip B in the center of the same, and is designed to engage the holes in the straps, as seen in Fig. 1.
The arched piece G, running at right angles to the strip B, is provided with hooks h,which project downward and inward toward each other, and possessing such a degree of curvature at their ends as to secure andretaiu upon them the cockeye attached to the traces of the harness or the slots cut in the leather of such traces. shown, for the sake of lightness; but thehooks are protected by the arched piece, so that the hairs of the horses tail will not be caught in said hooks.
WhatI claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
This arched piece is openworked, as
As an improved article of manufacture, the
combined buckle and trace-carrier described, consisting of the base portion a, having apertures b b and c c, the transverse strip B, having its lower face flush with the lower face of g the base portion, and its upper face cut away to form the recess d, flush with the apertures b, and the arched piece G, arranged at right angles to the strip B, and formed with the hooks 71., covered by said arched piece, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof laffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
S AMUEL H. TOLES.
