Description

(No Model.)
W. B. RILEY.
' HORSE BLANKET.
No. 542,967. Patented July 16, 1895.
' INVENTOR I whim w 1 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM B. RILEY, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WM. B. RILEY & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
HORSE-BLANKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,967,
Application filed March 3,1893. Renewed June 12,
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Blanket Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a horse or animal blanket having a the surcingle thereof, whereby the same is prevented from wearing through the blanket and chafing the animal, and providing the surcingle with a loop of novel construction, the same being adapted to hold the buckle for said surcingle, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a horse-blanket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a portion thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a section on line a: as, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a horse-blanket, which, excepting the features of my invention applied thereto, is of usual construction.
B designates the sureingles of the blanket, and O designates the buckles thereof.
D designates pieces of leather or other suitable stout or tough material, which are secured to the blanket behind the buckles O, and have the latter resting thereagainst, it
being evident that the buckles rest upon and rub against said pieces, whereby the blanket is guarded from being worn through and the animal from being chafed.
guard for the fastening of dated July 16, 1895. 1895. Serial No. 552,597. (No model.)
In order to connect the buckles with the guards or pieces D, so as to appear on the outside of the latter.
The cross-pieces of the buckles are seated in said loops, and as the surcingles and guards are stitched or otherwise secured to the blanket, the buckles will be found to be firmly connected with the blanket.
In the present case I show the buckles as formed each with a tongue G for connection with a loop H on the opposite end of the surcingle, but it is evident that any other form of buckles or fastenings may be employed, and the strap may have openings to receive the tongues in lieu of said loop I-I, without afiecting the nature of the invention.
In the use of the term surcingles I comprehend what is known as a girth, belt, 850.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A blanket fastening device consisting of a surcingle secured to said blanket, and having a looped end with a buckle thereon, a guard piece between said buckle end and the said blanket, said guard piece having an opening through which said looped end passes, and means on the other end of said surcingle for securing said end to the buckle on the looped end, substantially as described.
WILLIAM B. RILEY.
