Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Y oEErcE.
ILIXY F. SMITH, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
NECKTIE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,265, dated January 29, 1861.
To all 'whom it may concern:
ABe it known that I, PLINY F. SMITH, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Necktie; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
It has long been adesideratum to manu facture an adjustable neck tie, in all widths, of which, by the symmetry of the several parts when joined together, a` complete whole is formed, ready for the neck; whereby also, the necessity and veXation of tying an approved knot on every occasion of dressing the neck, is entirely avoided, and by the mechanical manner of cutting out the fabric, and putting the parts together, the tie is adapted to necks of all sizes; to the approval and comfort of all wearers; and when upon the neck to present the appear-ance of the whole having been there adjusted with great care by the wearer. These results, and more, have been obtained by my improvement.
It is well known that but few gentlemen can tie a satisfactory knot upon their own necks; that a bow cannot be tied upon the neck of any one, in the use of the common bias tie, without exposing the Seam or wrong side to view; that all bow knots when so tied, are apt to become lax, or displaced, whereby the collar is frequently broken down, giving a general aspect of diShabille to the entire neck dress. All these objectionable considerations, which have been so long, so frequently and so justly urged against neck ties as hitherto made, are fully and entirely superseded inthe improvement I herewith submit.
In Figure l of the accompanying drawing, I show the open tie with clasp A- by which the application of the tie is rendered so simple and convenient to, yet firm when applied by, the wearer; also the inner side of bow B, and the outside, of the back parts, of the tie, C and D.
In Fig. 2 I show clasp A kas closed upon the neck; the manner of application of india rubber or other elastic cords or braids E and E, bywhich C is connected with the inner linings of D, and is drawn into D as in a case, by which general arrangement the tie is at once rendered self adjusting.
In Fig. 3 I show the perfect tie as it appears upon the neck with the front view of permanent bow B, also the traced line Gr to show how far C may be drawn into D by virtue of the elastic cords E and E, thus securing the perfect fitting of ties by this plan to necks of all sizes, and constituting a simple, convenient and desirable article of new manufacture.
I do not claim the application of the clasp, nor the india rubber as new.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- As a new article of manufacture, the necktie herein described.
PLINY F. SMITH.
