My present invention relates generally to neckwear, and has particular reference to certain improvements in neckband portions.

A general object of the invention is to provide certain improvements of the character in which a neckband portion is composed of two sections adapted to be separably connected end to end.

One of the features of the invention lies in providing a pair of complementary fasteners on the ends of said sections, respectively, in combination with an extension flap on one of the sections adapted to overlie the area of juncture when the fasteners are connected.

Another feature of the invention lies in providing an open-ended pocket at the end of one of the sections, and mounting one of the complementary fasteners in said pocket in an improved manner.

A still further feature of the invention lies in forming such a pocket of the inner and outer plies of tie material, of which the neckband portion is composed; and in making the outer wall of the pocket longer than the inner wall so as to provide the extension flap hereinbefore referred to.

A still further feature of the invention lies in mounting one of the complementary fasteners within the pocket by securing it to a stretchable band whose inner end is secured to the inner end of the pocket.

I achieve the foregoing objects, and such other objects as may hereinafter appear or be pointed out, in the manner illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a necktie construction embodying the features of my present invention;

Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken substantially along the line 22 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an elevational view showing the neckband sections connected end to end;

Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially along the line 55 of Figure 3.

I have chosen to illustrate my present invention in connection with a so-called ready-made bow tie, comprising the knot portion l0 and the two oppositely extending neckband portions H and I2. The neckband section I2, which I have illustrated, is of the adjustable variety whereby a portion I3 is doubled back upon the body of the section I2 and is provided with a hook I4 adapted to enter any selected one of a series of perforations I5. A loop |6 is carried by the section l2 and constitutes one of the complementary fasteners for securing this section in a separable manner to the section II when the tie is to be worn. Accordingly, the portion of the section l2 to which the loop I6 is applied may be deemed to be the end of the section l2, as this term is used herein and in the appended claims. In other words, it is 10 immaterial to the present invention whether the section I2 is of adjustable length or not. It is equally immaterial whether the tie portion is a bow or a four-in-hand type of knot; and, furthermore, it is immaterial Whether the necktie 15 construction is of the ready-made variety or the untied variety.

The essential elements of the present construction, so far as the present invention is concerned, consist of the two separate neckband sections H and I2 adapted to be separably con-- nected in end-to-end relation. As already mentioned, the section l2 has at its end a fastener element consisting of the loop I6. The other section II has a complementary fastener in the 25 form of a hook I! which is adapted to engage separably with the midportion of the loop Hi.

In accordance with my invention, the hook I1 is mounted on the end of a stretchable band |8, which may be of elastic or the like, the inner end of this band being secured, as at l9, to the inner end of a pocket formed on the section II. This pocket has an outer wall 2|] and an inner wall 2|, and in accordance with my invention, the outer wall 20 is formed on, and is preferably integral with, the outer ply 22 of the neckband construction. Similarly, the inner wall 2| is formed on, and is preferably integral with, the inner ply 23 of the neckband construction. The plies 22 and 23 are stitched together at their longitudinal edges, and the walls 20 and 2| of the pocket are similarly stitched together, as shown most clearly at the points 24 in Figure 5.

The free end 25 of the inner wall 2| is preferably doubled back upon itself, as shown most clearly in Figures 2 and 4, though it need not be stitched down. The free end 26 of the outer wall 2| is similarly doubled back upon itself and is preferably stitched down as at 21.

In accordance with my invention, the outer wall 29 of the pocket is longer than the inner wall 2|, whereby an extension flap is provided by the excess length. This flap as a whole is designated by the reference numeral 28, and it will be observed that this flap overlies the area of juncture when the fasteners l6 and I! are connected. This is shown most clearly in Figures 3 and 4, and the advantage lies in the fact that the fasteners are concealed and covered, thereby improving the efficiency with which the neckband may be disposed in association with a collar. In the case of a tie which is used for fulldress wear, the concealment is of particular advantage because it hides from the casual observer the fact that the wearer is using a readymade bow tie.

In accordance with my invention, the fastener I1 is normally retained in complete concealment within the pocket, this being accomplished by making the band l3 of sufliciently short length to retain the hook I! normally Within the confines of the pocket. This prevents the hook from contacting with the neckband of the collar or shirt with which the tie is worn.

In general, it will be understood that changes in the details, herein described and illustrated for the purpose of explaining the nature of my invention, may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims. It is therefore intended that these de tails be interpreted as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention,'and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a tie having a neckband portion composed of two sections, means for separably joining said sections end to end, comprising complementary fasteners carried by said sections, respectively, an open-end pocket formed on the end of one of said sections, and one of said fasteners being carried Within said pocket, the outer Wall of said pocket being longer than the inner wall so as to form an extension flap which overlies the area of juncture when the fasteners are connected.

2. In a tie having a neckband portion composed of two sections, means for separably joining said sections end to end, comprising complementary fasteners carried by said sections, respectively, an open-end pocket formed on the end of one of said sections, a stretchable band disposed within said pocket and secured at its inner end to the inner end of said pocket, one of said fasteners being carried upon said band, said band in unstretched condition being sufiiciently short to retain the fastener within the pocket, and the outer wall of said pocket being longer than the inner wall so as to form an extension fiap which overlies the area of juncture when the fasteners are connected.
