Description
Dec. 7, 1937. R. ALsToN MECHANICAL ADJUSTABLE SHIRT Filed March 18, 1956 Patented Dec. 7, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application March 18,
4 Claims.
This invention is a novel improvement in shirts, particularly of the Work-shirt type, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a shirt which will be adjustable to various sizes by an arrangement of box plaits, one box plait being disposed at the center of the back of the shirt and extending the full length through the collar or neck band down to the lower edge, with adjusting means such as a belt strap incorporated in the collar or neck band for increasing or decreasing at that point the width of the plait and consequently the size of the collar, an unplaited outer collar being secured to the adjustable collar band to give a neat nish thereto for all adjustments of the collar band.
I will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates one practical embodiment thereof to enable others to adopt and use same; and will summarize in the claims the novel features of construction, and
novel combinations of parts, for which protection is desired.
Fig. l is a front elevation of my novel shirt.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation showing the box plaits in the back and collar band in open position, the
outer collar being shown in upstanding position.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the shirt similar to Fig. 2, but showing the box plaits in the back and collar band in closed position.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan View of the collar band inner lining with reinforcing strips stitched thereto` Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the collar band showing same in open position.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6, Fig. 5.
As shown in the drawing, the front sections A,
v A, are of usual construction, but the shirt is provided at the center of its back portion B with a box plait I (Figs. 2 and 3) terminating at the top of the collar band 8, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 5.
Across the base of the collar band 8 at the outer side of the shirt are straps 2 (Fig. 5) one of which carries a belt buckle 3 which engages the other strap whereby the width of the box plait at the collar band 8 may be adjusted to suit the size of the wearer. Over the neck band is secured in the usual manner the outer collar 4 (Fig. 6) which collar is of usual formation and is unplaited, the outer collar remaining substan- 1936, Serial No. 69,555
tially the same size for any adjustment of the back plait I and of the buckle 3. The back plait I allows for adjustment of the shirt across the back to suit the size of the wearer.
The collar band comprises a lining member 5 (Fig. 4) having a V-shaped notch 5a in its lower edge extending substantially entirely through the member; and reinforcing members 6 and 'I (Fig. 4) are stitched upon the member 5 at opposite sides of the notch 5a. Over the assembled lining members 5, 6, 1, is stitched a member 8 (Fig. 5) having a box plait 8a forming a continuation of the box plait I of the back of the shirt through the neck band. The straps 2 are secured to the member 8 at opposite sides of the plait 8a. 'I'he reinforcing members 5, 6, l, of the neck band 8 are of the same height as the neck band.
The shirt is made as followsz-The neck band 8 of the shirt is about 18 inches long before forming the plait 8a and joining the outer collar 4. The box plait I in the center of the back of the shirt is about three inches wide and is joined with the collar band 8 so that the plait 8a is a continuation of plait I through the neck band. These adjustable straps 2 cannot be seen when the outer collar 4 is turned down.
I claim:
l. In an adjustable shirt having a back portion and having sleeves and a collar band; an expansible plait disposed transversely in the collar band and extending partly into the back; and means for adjusting the Width of the plait.
2. In a combination as set forth in claim l, said means being disposed at the collar band.
3. In an adjustable shirt having a back portion and having sleeves and a collar band and an outer collar attached thereto; an expansible plait at the center of the back extending to the collar band; a second plait in the collar band forming a continuation of the first mentioned plait and means for adjusting the Width of the band plait at the collar band plait.
4. In an adjustable shirt having a back portion and a collar band and an outer collar attached thereto; a box in the center of the back plait extending the full length of the back and to the collar band; a second box plait in the collar band forming a continuation of the iirst mentioned plait; and means for adjusting the width of the plait at the collar band.
