To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES IV. ONEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hendersons Cross-Roads, in the county of Wilson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains lSOdIlZlkB and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l of the drawings is a front view of my device with a portion of a buckle and chain attached. Fig. 2 is a front view of a portion of the buckle-plate. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same with a portion of the back strap and chain applied, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View of the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in tug-loops or trace-carriers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the flat carrierplate, and B the back-band, to which it is designed to be attached. The upper end of the plate is formed with two parallel slots, 0 and D, which eX- tend transversely the breadth of the backhand, and are designed to receive and engage the same. The upper slot, 0, has its teeth E on the inside of the plate, and the backs of the teeth are beveled downward and inward in the slot-off1set K,

to their points. Thelower margin of this slot is beveled downward and inward, parallel, or nearly so, to the backs of the teeth. IVhen the back-band is to be inserted through this slot from the inside of the plate it is directed upward, and there is brought down and passed upward and backward through the lower slot, I), the teeth F, which are on the outside.

The backs of the teeth F are beveled downward and outward, and the lower margin of I the slot D is also beveled downward and outward parallel or nearly parallel to the backs of the teeth. Then the plate is in position on the back-band, it hangs downward on the outside thereof, and is securely fastened to the band by-the cramping action of the teeth I and the beveled margins of the slots. 1

Cr represents a vertical longitudinal looplug, which'is formed on the face of the plate below the slots 0 and D. Through this lug is formed the vertically elongated opening or offset K, which extends transversely of the plate. The upper portion, I, of this opening is expanded in circular form, as shown,'and the diametrie width of this portion is a little .more than the width of the chain-link L, it

being designed to allow the chain to pass freely through this portion backward and forward, and to be turned with facility therein. From the expanded upper portion, I, of this opening extends downward the slot-offset K, which is straight and narrow, its width beingbut little more than that of the thickness of the chainlink and much less than the breadth thereof.

Then the trace-chain has been passed through the loop-lug and properly adjusted with relation to the back-band, a link of the chain is turned in the expanded portion of the openingIuntil its planeis vertical, and itis dropped whereby it is held in position, and, on account of the adjacent links, cannot move backward or forward.

I am aware that a back-band loop has been constructed in which the bucklcplate has parallel slots with beveled biting-edges, and a lateral projection having a T-slot, the new row or lower portion of which is of V form, and the upper portion rectangular, and therefore do not claim such construction, broadly.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

As an improved article of manufacture, the trace-carrier described, consisting of the plate A, having the transverse parallel slots 0 and D near its upper end, provided with the teeth E and F onopposite sides, as shown, below the said slots a loop -lug, G, which tapers downwardly on its outer walls, having its upper portion provided with a transverse circular opening, and beneath the said opening a straight narrow vertical offset, K, substantially as shown and described.
