To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER P. WAD- DELL, of Union City, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in buckles and especially in that class of buckles designed for use as trace-carriers; and the invention consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the buckle. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the buckle with the strap applied, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the buckle with the strap and chain applied.

The buckle is formed with a plate or framework A, slotted or otherwise suitably constructed to provide the single cross-bar B at its lower end and the cross-bars D and E at its upper end, slots or spaces b, d, and e being provided adjacent the said cross-b`ars for the passage of the back-strap F, preferably made of heavy drilling. A number of short spurs G project from the rear face of the plate or frame-work A, immediately above the slotb, the said spurs being preferably ranged in a series across the plate or frame-v lines on opposite sides of the hook H, the said hooks h opening in opposite directions to the hook H-that is to say, downwardly--while A the hook I-I opens upwardly, as shown and be understood from the drawings.

W`hen turned horizontally in the keeper formed of hooks H h, the retaining-hooks h h prevent the accidental displacement of the chain-link and secure the same in engagement with the hook II until such link is turned vertically, when it can be easily slipped out of engagement, as may be desired. The strap F is passed from back to front through slot d, thence over cross-bar E, and from front to back through the slot e, thence down the rear side of plate or frame-work A, around the lower edge or cross-bar B, thence through slot b, from front to rear and up between the plate or frame-work A and the portion of strap F, extended down from slot e, the said inner or intermediate portion of the strap being engaged by the spurs Gr, which are so short that they do not extend through the strap, yet are sufficiently long to hold the strap securely, inasmuch as the strain there'- on is largely taken up by its numerous coils through and around the plate or frame-work A. To take up the strap, slack may be taken through the slots and its free end drawn up, and, if drawn through the slot e, may be left to hang over the link-keeper II h, or may be passed on to rear through slot d.

The double arrangement of strap in rear of the buckle-plate or frame-work forms a pad and prevents the buckle from injuring the side of the horse, which pad maybe increased by placing a slip of any suitable material between the double of the strap on rear, said slip to extend from slot e to slot b. This will eftectually prevent the spurs from making impression on the horses side in case of back-strap being of thin material.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is l. The improved buckle herein described, comprising the plate or frame-work having crossbars at its upper and lower end, and provided on its front face with the hooks I-I and h h, all substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
