Patented Nov. 1, 1881.-
UNITED STATES PATENT .1
THOMAS O. HOLDEN AND JACKSON GORHAM, OF GRAWFORDVILLE, GA.
HORSE-DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,931, dated November 1, 1881.
Application filed July 22, 1881.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS C. HOLDEN and JACKSON GORHAM, of (Jrawfordville, in
the county of Taliaferro and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in horsedetachers, the object being to provide an article of this character which will combine simplicity and cheapness of construction with durability and ease of operation.
With these objects in view our invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will hereinafter be described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a pair of thills provided with detaching devices constructed in accordance with our invention; and Fig. 2 is a detached view, in perspective, of our improved device.
Guides A, secured to the upper faces of each of the thills B, are provided with bentarms or hooks 0, adapted to receive the sliding bars D, which are held in position within them byretaining-plates .E, secured to the guides.
The forward ends of the traces F, the inner ends of which are secured to the ends of the whiffletreeH in the ordinary manner, are passed through rings I, made integral and at right angles with the rear ends of the sliding bars D. The said rings may, however, be made in sep arate piece and attached to the sliding bars, if such construction is found more desirable. Inwardly-projecting perforated lugs J, formed at the forward ends of the said sliding bars, are adapted to be engaged with rocking fastening-plates K by removable pins L.
Cords M, secured to rings N, formed at the upper ends of the pins L, extend into the Vehicle, of which the thills are a part, and enable the occupants thereof to sever all connection between it and the horse by simply pulling the (No model.)
cords and withdrawing the pins from engagement with the lugs J and plate K.
The inner ends, 0, of the straps, attached to thefastening-platesK,constitntetheholdbacks of the harness, and are attached to the breechingin any desired manner, while the onterends, P, of said straps fill the twofold office of holdback and draw-strap, and are fastened either to the breast-collar or heme-tugs of the harness.
The reciprocation of the bars D in the guides A insures the required freedom of movement to the traces and whiffletree, and the rocking movement of the plates K permits them to be accommodated to the movements of the horse.
We would have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to the exact construction shown and described, but hold ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the thills of a "ehicle and guides secured to the thills and extending inwardly therefrom, of sliding bars located in said guides, and having traces secured to their rear ends and combined holdback and draw-straps detachably secured to their forward ends, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the thills of a vehicle and guides secured to the thills and extending inwardly therefrom, of sliding bars located in said guides, rings secured to or made integral with the rear ends of said bars, and adapted to receive the traces and rocking plates having combined holdback and draw-straps secured to them, detachably secured to the forward ends of said bars by removable pins, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 16th day of July, 1881.
THOMAS C. HOLDEN. J AGKSON GORHAM.
