Description
UNITED STAES PATENT OFFICE,
CHESTER NV. SYKES, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
CARVING-KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,061, dated November 8, 1859i.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that- I, CHESTER W. SYKEs, of the city, county, and State Of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carving- Knife; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings andtO the letters of reference marked thereupon.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of shears with the ordinary carving knife so that the advantages of each instrument are attained.
To enable Others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and Operation.
Figure l represents the shears open as if in the act Of use; Fig. 2, the shears closed.
A, is the blade of the knife, differing from ordinary knives in the fact that its back edge B is made sharp and Of such a form as tO fit it to be one of the blades of the shears.
B is the second blade of the shears.
C, is the pivot or fulcrum Of the shears.
D, D comprise the handle of the combined instrument.
E is a spring by which the parts of the handle and the shear blades are separated.
F F are the hook and eye Or loop and pin by which the parts Of the handle are held together when the instrument is not in use.
In using the instrument for carving or other purposes, the knife maybe Operated precisely like an ordinary knife, and whenever it is desirable to employ the shears, it will be operated like ordinary shears, Observing only that the blades of the shears are separated by the action of the spring E and not by the force of the hand as in ordinary shears. The blade B may when advisable as in the case of dividing tenacious joints be used as a lever Or wedge.
Besides its use in carving meats the combined instrument may be employed for pruning, cutting cloth, paper, &c.
IVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a knife and shears substantially as described as an instrument especially adapted for carving meats.
CHESTER WV. SYKES.
