POCKET-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,799, dated October 15, 1889. Application filed May 29, 1883. Serial No. 275,523. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN C. F. SCHENCK, a citizen of the United States, residing in M0- line, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Knife, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in what are usually termed pocketknives, consisting of a handle and pivotally-connected knife-blade; and the object of my improvement is to provide a fixed or removable lever-arm in connection with the pivoted knifeblade, against which power may be applied to swing the knife-blade out of the handle, or, as it is usually termed, to open the knife. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of the knife, the blade being closed, as also the arm. Fig. 2 is a side View of the knife, the blade being closed and the arm opened. Fig. 3 is a side view of the knife, the blade being opened one-half. Fig. 4. is a side view of the knife, the blade being opened three-quarters. Fig. 5 is a side view of the knife, the blade being entirely open ed and arm resting upon the top or back of the handle. Fig. 6 is a side view of the arm or lever-arm. Fig. 7 is a top or plan View of the arm, and Fig.8 is a side view of the knife-blade.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The handle A, knife-blade B, spring j, and rivet K constitute an ordinary pocket-knife. To the back and at the rear end of the knife blade B, I make a shoulder I), through which is a perforation c, and below is another shoulder a. At the rear end of the knifeblade, through its main shoulder, is the perforation (Z, common to all knives known as pocket-knives, through which and the perforations Z of the handle A passes the rivet K. An arm G is pivoted at its end by the rivet 1', through perforations in its shoulders e and f, which straddle the shoulder 17 of the knife-blade B. On the top of arm C and near its pivoted end is a depression or slot g, to accommodate the spring j during the movements of the arm C and knife-blade B.

When the blade of the knife is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to open it, the arm 0 is thrown back, as shown in Fig. 2, and pressure is applied to the under side, which throws open the blade, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, and when the blade is entirely open the arm C rests upon the back of the handle A, as shown in Fig. 5. A pocketknife so constructed is especially convenient to persons who, through misfortune, have lost one hand, and it is also desirable for use to others, because the knife may have a stiff and strong springj and yet by my device be easily opened.

It will be readily seen that,without departing from the scope of my invention, the arm C may be changed in various forms-as, for instance, the slot g may extend through the arm and to the opposite end, and so formed as to be flush with the back of the blade when closed, or so formed as to rest by the side of the blade, or capable of being detached from the blade by being constructed so that one end can be inserted for use in a slot or other receptacle formed in the blade and thereafter detached and secured in a sheath formed in the handle for that purpose. So, too, it will be seen that the shoulder Z) of the knife-blade can be dispensed with and some other mechanical equivalent substituted for the purpose of making permanent or temporary con nection between the knife-blade B and the arm 0, for the purposes herein stated, without departing from the scope of my invention. Itwill also be readily seen that my invention can be attached to knives having one or more blades.

In a knife having a handle and pivoted knife-blade, an arm attached near the pivoted end of the knife-blade for applying force against the blade for the purpose of swinging the same open or out of the handle, substantially as described.
