UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. BROWN, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
UNDER-GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,498, dated June 28, 1881,
Application filed March 28, 1881. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BROWN, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Under-Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is applicable to undershirts and drawers; and it consists in the introduction, in the form of gores or gussets, of knitted fabric to certain parts of a woven garment, as hereinafter specified, to give elasticity and rosity to such garments at said point The invention also contemplates the use of knitted cuffs or hands B at the ends of the sleeves of undershirts and at the ottoms of the legs of drawers, whereby to give greater elasticity to these parts of the garments.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of an undershirt, and Fig. 2 a view of a pair of drawers, embodying the invention.
The parts marked A are constituted of woven fabric, and the parts marked B B of knitted fabric. The knitted fabric may either be sewed to or inserted within the garment, or may be loosely woven or worked in the formation of the woven material. The parts B at the ends of the arms of the shirt and at the ends of the legs of the drawers form bands, which, having a certain degree of elasticity, clasp the wrists or ankles.
I am aware that garments made of animal skin have had a'fiexiblefabric introduced at certain points, and also that 'in dress-shirts insertions in the form of gores or gussets have been employed at ornear the neckband, and also that a gusset of web or other open fabric has been inserted under the arm -pit. Such skin garments and shirts, therefore, I do not claim; but
I claim as my invention- 1. In undergarments, the combination of the woven body fabric A and knitted insertionsB B, constructed and arranged substantially as set forth, for the purposes specified.
2. In under-garments, the combination of the woven body fabric A, knitted insertions B B, and knitted cuffs B B, constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 24th day of March, A. D. 1881. I
CHAS. A. BROWN. 1.. s.] I Witnesses:
