Description

'( NO Model.) I
E. S. WHEELER.
Casket Trimmings.
No. 234,155. Patented Nov. 9,1880.
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELONZO S. WHEELER, OF WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JONATHAN E. WHEELER, OF SAME PLACE.
GASKET-TRIMMINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,155, dated November 9, 1880.
Application filed September 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELoNzo S. WHEELER, of Westport, in the county of Faireld and State of Connecticut, have invented new Cofiin Screws and Tips; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which 1o said drawings constitute part ot' this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view Fig. 2, a longitudinal section enlarged.
This invention relates to au improvement in ornamental trimmings for coftins, such as screws and tips for the handle-bars. Usually these are made from metal. In many cases a fabric-covered bar is employed, but for such bars the metal tips have been necessari- 2o ly used, and corresponding metal screws.
The object of this invention is to provide fabric-covered tips and screws corresponding to the bar of the handle; and it consists in the construction hereinafter described, and
particularly recited in the claim.
I make the tip in several sections, each section of a shape to be covered in similar manner to covered buttons.
As here represented, A is the base, which 3o is made with a paper or other body, B, with a fabric-covering, a, placed over the upper side and closed in on the under side, as at b,
in the usual manner of closing the back of covered buttons.
C is the head, composed of an upper and lower portion, D E, of paper or other filling, with a fabric-covering, d c, on the exposed surface, turned in at the edges, also in the (No model.)
usual manner of covering buttons. But into this head the head end of a screw, F, is per- 4o manently fixed, so that the screw may be turned by means of the head C.
Intermediate between the head C and base A is a section, Cr, also covered in the usual manner of covering buttons.
The screw F extends down through the base in the usual manner for coffin screws and tips, so as to be screwed into the wood to secure the top, or as lifters for the cover, or into the ends of the handle-bar as an ornamental tip. 5o
The outline or shape of the head or tip is immaterial to this invention, but may be made according to the taste or demand ofthe trade, it only being essential that the parts should be of such shape as will make the covering practical.
As a means of ornamentation metal sections may be introduced which will form a pleasing contrast to the fabric-covered section.
By the term fabric-covered I wish to be 6o understood as meaning textile and similar materials, such as may be used for covering buttons.
I claim- The herein-described handle tip or screw, composed of several sections, each section consisting of a bod)r covered with a fabric or similar material, and independent of the other sections, its edge closed in onto the body, and the several sections united by the screw pass- 7o ing through them, substantially as described.
ELONZO S. WHEELER.
