IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.`

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,370, dated May 13, 1879; application tiled February 1, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Locri-1N KNAPP, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain novel improvements in neck-ties, and has for its objects to overcome the many disadvantages incident to their present construction.

As at present constructed the ordinary necktie consists of a simple ribbon-like piece of material, which is passed around the neck, and the two ends formed by hand into a suitable bow. In order that the two ends should bear the proper relation to the knot or central loop when the bow is formed it is necessary to so adjust the two ends prior to forming the bow that when completed they shall be of about equal length. When the bow has been formed it is very common and annoying for the bow to move laterally and become displaced from its proper central position, and it also freneck-tie rides upwardly over the rear portion of the shirt-collar.

My invention, as above stated, has for its' objects to overcome all these disadvantages herein enumerated.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a neck-tie embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the ends adjusted preparatory to forming the bow; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a bow formed so as to have the ends in proper relation and adjustment with the central loop.

lMy invention consists of forming in or providin g the neck-tie A, at a predetermined point between the two en ds, with a button-hole, loop, or other fastening device, B, by which the necktie may be secured to the rear central collar-- button in such position that the two ends will be necessarily properly adjusted with reference to each other, in order that when the bow shall have been formed the said ends will extend theproper distance beyond the central loop portion, and whereby any tendency to ride up at the rear of the neck is avoided.

In lieu ot' the ordinary button-hole represented in the drawings, any other suitable securing device may be employed, such as an elastic or other loop. It will be readily understood that, having determined what special relation the two ends should bear to each other to form a proper or perfect bow, it only becomes necessary to apply the button-h ole, loop, or other fastening device at. a predetermined point, and that it is perfectly immaterial what size or length the tie may be, as the fastening device will always be in substantially the same place.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A neck-tie formed of a single piece of woven material and provided with a single buttonhole, loop, or other fastening device at a point out of center between the ends of the tie, and adapted to be secured over the rear collarbutton of a shirt, so as to properly adjust the free ends of the tie for the formation of a4 bow with ends of equal length, and to prevent the riding up of the tie at the rear, substantially as described.
