Description

I D. CRANE. Metallic Button-Hole. Stay for Boots and Shoes.
No. 208,296. Patented Sept. 24,1878.
INVENTOR WITNESSES AZ7Ww/V BY ATTORNEYS.-
NFETERS. FHOTO LUHOGRAPHEE WASHINGTON. D. Q
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL CRANE, OF SENECA FALLS, NEWV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC BUTTON-HOLE STAYS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,296, dated September 24, 1878; application filed August 31, 1878.
To all whom it may co ncm'n:
Be it known that I, DANIEL CRANE, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Metallic Button-Hole Stays for Button Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of a shoe to which my improvement has been applied. Fi g. 2 is a detail perspective view of the stay.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for preventing the buttonholes of button boots and shoes from tearing out or becoming frayed by the strain of the button-hook and of the button, and which shall be simple in construction, easily applied, and effective in use.
The invention consists in the metallic stays made in the form of sections of rings, with flanges upon their upper and lower sides, and with downwardly-projecting points upon the edges of their upper flanges, to adapt them to be secured in the forward ends of the buttonholes of boots and shoes, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the quarter, B the vamp, and C the button-hole fly, of a button-shoe. D is the stay, which is made of thin sheet metal, in the form of a section of a ring, and of such a size as to fit into the enlarged forward end of the fly C and be clinched when the stay is compressed. The stay D is placed in the forward end of the button-hole, and its flanges are then pressed together upon the fly C with some suitable tool, pressing them down snugly upon the opposite sides of the said fly and clinching its points. With this construction all the strain of the button-hook in buttonin g the buttons, and all the strain of the buttons when buttoned, will come upon the stays D, so that the button-holes cannot tear out or fray. The stays D will be covered and hid by the buttons when the boots or shoes are buttoned.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The metallic button-hole stay for boots and shoes, constructed in the form of a segment of a ring, with upper and lower flanges, the upper flange provided with downwardly-projecting points, adapted to pass through the stock and hold the stay in place, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
DANIEL CRANE.
