BENJAMIN F. lit-YER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LOUIS GATHMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
STOCKlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,131, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed April 10, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, BENJAMIN ERYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in stockings.
The object of the invention is to obtain a stocking by the use of which that part thereof which is less exposed to wear can be utilized and worn even after the remaining portion is no longer in fit condition for use; and to the accomplishment of the above the invention consists in forming the stocking in two parts, and in providing it with suitable means for holding the parts together when being worn. Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a stocking complete and in use, and Figs. 2 and 3 sectional detail views showing different means for securing the two parts of the stocking together.
Like letters refer to like parts in each view.
A represents the lower or foot part of the stocking, and B the upper or leg part.
To the upper end of part A are attached hands a, situated preferably on opposite sides thereof, while at corresponding points near the lower end of part B slits or openings b are formed. At a point near the upper end of each band a there is provided a suitable button-hole, which is adapted to engage with a button, 0, secured to part B at a suitable point, as shown. By this arrangement of parts it will be seen that the two parts of the stocking may be securely held in place, while at the same time they may be detached from one another, if desired.
In Fig. 3 I have shown another method of securing the two parts of the stocking together.
As shown in that figure, there is formed upon the upper edge of part A athickened section, d, and upon the lower end of part B a similar section, 8, the two being adapted to overlap to accomplish the end sought.
By use of my invention, when the foot-section of the stocking, which is the part most liable to be worn or to be soiled, is no longer in proper condition for use, it may be detached from the leg-section and another foot-piece substituted.
It will be understood that I do not confine 5; myself to any particular material from which the article is to be formed, nor to any particular manner of securing the two parts of which it is formed together, as each may be varied considerably without departing from the invention.
I am aware that stockings have heretofore been made of several sections sewed together, and therefore disclaim such an article.
What I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a stocking composed of parts A B, part B provided with buttons 0, and with suitable openings, 1 near its lower end, and part A provided with straps a, adapted to pass through openingsb and engage with buttons 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. RYER.
