AROHIBALD M. RICHMOND, OF NEW YORK, N.'Y., ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE L. RICHMOND, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED BUTTON AND FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,135, dated October 22, 1878; application filed March 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD M. Bron MOND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Button and Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of one of my co1nbined buttons and fasteners. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, showing a button with metal shell. Fig. 3 is a section of the same, showing a button with a cloth-covered shell. Figs. 4. to 9 show modifications of the fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish buttons provided with fasteners to hold them securely in the button-holes, and which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention consists in a combined button and fastener, in which the fastener is a cross-head formed upon the end of the stem, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the shell or cover of the button, which may be made of metal or of metal covered with cloth, or of any other suitable material, and which is secured to the back B in the usual way. The back B may be made of metal, wood, paper, or other suitable material.
C is the fastener, which is formed of wire, and is secured to the back of -the button A B in the usual way.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the fast ener is represented as being formed of a piece of wire bent together at its center, and having one of its arms bentupward to form a stem, the rest of the wire forming a cross-head.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the fastener G is represented as being formed of two pieces of wire having their upper parts parallel to each other and secured to the button A B, and their lower parts bent from each other to form the cross-head.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the crosshead is made in the same way as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, except that the middle part of the wire that forms the cross-head is bent downward into an angle.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the wide part of the stem is lengthwise of the buttonhole, and the cross-head is 'at right angles with it.
The fastener shown in Fig. 9 is represented as being formed of a single wire with its lower end split and the partsbent outward at right angles to form the crosshead.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The button 'A B, having a stern, O, provided with a rigid cross-head at its end, which operates as a fastener, all substantially as shown and described.
AROHIBALD M. RICHMOND.
