SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,464, dated May 13, 1884.

Beit known thatI, WILLIAM HALKYARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provi' deuce, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to button-fasteners; and it consists of a metallic flanged eyelet, in combination with a staple of peculiar form, adapted to receive the shank of a button and pass through the eyelet, and means for retaining said staple within the eyelet, the whole being finally adapted to be inserted through the leather or fabric and clinched thereunder at one operation, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents the improved fastener complete and ready for attachment, the eyelet being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing the fastener attached or clinched beneath the fabric; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the staple.

Heretofore, so far as I am aware, the buttons (especially shoe-buttons) and fasteners have been sold separately, thereby causing at times much inconvenience and annoyance. This invention overcomes such objections,from the fact that the buttons, staples, and eyelets are all combined together at the manufactory, thus making a combined button and fastening. In this form it is placed upon the market and sold ready for attachment and use.

In carrying out the invention, again referring to the drawings, I employ an ordinary metallic eyelet, 0, having a flange, c.

B represents the improved staple, having a shank or loop, I), and the two depending prongs b, terminating in notched or barbed ends I)", the whole being one piece, and adapted to be formed from wire or other suitable stock. The prongs are separated slightly, as shown in Fig. 3.

The manner of combining the parts of the invention maybe described'as follows: The shank or loop of a button. D, is first passed through. the staple B and into the eye I) there- .of. The prongs b of said staple are then sprung or pressed together and inserted into the eyelet O, the'eye b resting upon the top or flanged side thereof, and the notched ends I of the staple at the same time springing outwardly and bearing against the under side of the eyelet, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby firmly retaining all the parts in position and ready for instant use.

The method of attachment is as follows: The fabric or material F is first perforated, after which the fastening is passed through such perforation until the flange c rests upon the surface thereof, when, now, by means of a suitable setting-instrunient, both the prongs and eyelet are deflected and clinched at one operation against the under side of the fabric, as shown complete in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture, the combined button and fastenerA herein described, consisting of the button D, flanged eyelet C, and spring-staple B, the latter provided with means for retaining it in position within the eyelet, the whole combined, arranged, and adapted for use substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth. g

2. In a button fastening, the two-prong spring-staple B herein described, provided with a loop, I), and slightly curved and notched or barbed ends I)", substantially as shown and set forth.

8. The combination of the metallic flanged eyelet G with the spring-staple B, the latter provided with a button-retaining loop, I), and prongs b, terminating in the notched ends b", said staple adapted to pass loosely through the eyelet and retained therein, as shown and set forth. 4
