To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HALKYARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Attaching Buttons to Shoes, 830. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

Myinvention relates to an improved method of attaching buttons to shoes, &c.; and it consists, first, in passing a staple through the but ton-eye, then inserting the staple through a flanged eyelet, after which both the eyelet and staple are inserted through the leather or fabric, and clinched thereunder at one operation by suitable means, thereby forming a very strong, efficient, and comparatively inexpensive button-fastener, as will be more fullyhereinafter set forth.

In the annexed sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents in vertical central section my improved fastener applied to the fabric or material with button, &c., complete and ready for clinching or setting. Fig. 2 represents the same clinched. Fig. 3 represents a top View of the same with button removed. Fig. 4 rep resents an inverted or under vicwof the same when clinched.

Referring now to the drawings, I make use of an eyelet, A, having a flange, a, said eyelet 4 adapted to be inserted through the fabric E and project beyond the same at a, the flange a thereof resting upon the surface of the fabric, as shown. a

B represents a staple provided with the cente'r loop or eye, 5 adapted to receive the shank of a button, D, the prongs of the staple terminatingin the oppositely-beveled, and sharpened points I), all as fully shown in Fig. 1.

The manner of fastening buttons to fabrics according to my present invention is as follows: I first pass the staple B through the shank of the button 1) and into the eye If, then I insert the prongs of said staple into the neck of the eyelet A, the eye I) of said staple resting upon the flange a, thereby extending the prongs of the staple beyond the eyelet, as shown, Fig. 1. I now next place the whole within the jaw or member of a suitable settinginstrument adapted to receive the-same. The fabric now being placed in position, the manipulation of the setting-instrument forces at once both the staple and eyelet (unless previously perforated) through the fabric, Fig. 1, when, finally, the die of the otherjaw of the instrument is forcibly brought into contact with the projecting portions of the staple and eyelet, thus completing the attachment, as shown in Fig. 2, which results in the ends of the eyelet being bent and clinched into the fabric, and the prongs of the staple being also bent and clinched exterior to the eyelet, thereby producing a fastening much stronger than when attaching-prongs simply are used, as in the latter case the clinched prongs are frequently torn from the fabric or leather when in use, especially so when applied to thin stock. With my invention this defect is wholly overcome.

I prefer in practice to have the prongs of the staple B to just fill the interior of the eyelet laterally, as shown in Fig. 1.

I do not claim herewith means for attaching my improved button-fastener, as the same has been made the subject of a separate applica tion for United States Letters Patent, filed upon even date herewith. Neither do I claim, broadly, means for re-enforcing or protecting the fabric. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p The method of attaching buttons to fabrics, 850., herein described, which consists, first, in passing a staple through the eye or shank of the button, then inserting said staple through the neck of a flanged eyelet, after which the eyelet and staple are inserted through the fabric and clinched thereunder by suitable means at one operation, substantially as shown and set forth.
