Claims. (01. 164 -120) The invention relates to a mechanical device for piercing two holes in the top of and the objects of the device are mechanical combinations of members (0.) whereby jaws firmly grip the rim and top of can; (b) whereby one'hole is pierced in top of can, near margin ofcan; (0) whereby two holes are pierced in top of can, in line of an approximate diameter of the can, situated at the opposite margins; (d) whereby the members are so adjustable that the device will fit either a small or large size can; (e) whereby a rolled over upper edge of a lever, at right angle to its side, will cover working parts of the device and also form a more convenient surface upon which to place the hand; and (f) tension of a cross-bar can be gripped by the hand and fingers for conveniently applying the pressure. a
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Fig. 1 represents a side view (lever side) in which the device is shown with the lever I whereby the jaws '7 and 12-have the rim and top of can, and also in a position whereby a further pressure of the lever will cause teeth 15 and 16 to pierce two holes in top of the can. Fig. 2 represents the under view of the device, with the lever in the in a position same position.
The device consists of four members, besides the stationary but adjustable binding pivot 8, l, the lever; member 2, the piercing rod; member 3, the cross-bar; member 4, the cross-head. Binding pivot 8 passes through pivot hole in lever 1, slot 21 in cross-head 4, and pivot hole in cross-bar 3-.
Member 1 consists of a lever working on pivot 8, and includes the following combinations: (a)
pivothole 8 in which binding pivot 8 fits; (b)
whereby a lever and the exf and 1, for covering workpiercing rod fitting between cross-bar 3 and lever 1.
Member 3 consists of a cross-bar and includes the following combinations: 7 (a) stationary jaw 12, one of the jaws for gripping the rim and 5 top of can; (b) slot 1'7, in which fits and slides a the T-headed stud 10 of piercing rod 2; (0) slot 18, in which the two guides 5 and 5 of crosshead 4 fit and slide; (d) two pivot holes 8 and. 20, used for adjusting binding pivot 8," with assembled parts, so that device will fit either small or large size can; and (e) the extension of crossbar .3 itself to a point corresponding to the termination of lever 1 when down, for gripping with fingers when pressing down'lever .1. Adjustments.--Foruse of device on a large size can pivot 9 of piercing rod 2 will be in pivot hole 9 of lever 1,' and binding pivot 3 will be in pivot hole 8 of cross-bar 3" (as illustrated in Fig. 1); ioruse of device on a small size can pivot 9 of piercing rod 2 will be in pivot hole 14 hole 20 of cross-bar 3.
To operator-(a) Open lever 1 until it is upright or at right angle to cross-bar 3; (22) While in position above described place device over top of can so that the cross-bar 3 is approximately over the center of can; (0) Press down on lever 1 until entirely'down; (By placing the hand on rolled over upper edge 19 of lever 1 and grasping the extension of cross-bar 3 with the hand and fingers the operation is slightly easier) and (01) Open lever 1 to upright position again, 40 which opens jaws 7 and 12, and lifts devicefrom can.
Result of operation-in opening lever 1 to an upright position stud 13 of lever 1 contacts the left sidewall of slot 21 in cross-head 4 and presses the cross-head '4 (including, of course, jaw '7) backward until the distance between jaws 7 and 12 is greater than the length of the diameter'oi the can. When lever 1 has been pressed down untilthe position is the same as illustrated in Fig. 1 stud 13 of lever 1 contacts the right sidewall of slot 21 in cross-head 4, which acts as a cam, and which presses the cross-head 4 (including, of course, jaw forward until jaws .7 and 12 have firmly gripped the rim and top of can, and the shape of slot 21 is such that auniform grip will remain until lever 1 is entirely down. While in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 teeth and 16 are just resting on top of can and upon pressing lever 1 entirely down will pierce two holes in top of can, opposite each other, and close to margin or side of can.
Having thus shown and described an operative device to carry out my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A two-hole can opener of the class described, comprising a lever with: for receiving binding pivot passing through and held in place by a cross-bar, pivot the lever operates; (b) a stud for fitting in slot of cross-head and for operation of the cross-head; (c) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; ((1) two pivot holes for adjusting piercing rod so that device will fit either a small or large size can; and (e) a rolled over upper edge, at a right angle to side of lever, for covering the working parts of the device and also to form a broader surface upon which to place the hand.
. 2. A two-hole can opener of the class described, comprising a piercing rod with (a) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; (b) a T-headed 'stud connecting one end of piercing rod with a cross-bar, and fitting in and sliding in a slot of the cross-bar; and (c) a pivot connecting the opposite end of the piercing rod to a lever, to which lever there is attached a tooth for piercing the other hole in top of can.
3. A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a cross-bar with (a) a stationary jaw, being one of jaws for gripping rim and top of can; (b) a slot in which two guides of the cross-head fit and slide; (c) a slot in which a T-headed stud at one end of piercing rod fits and slides; (d) two pivot holes for adjusting a binding pivot and assembled parts so that the device will fit either a small or large size can; and (e) an extension of the cross-bar itself to a point corresponding to the termination of the lever when down for gripping with fingers when pressing down lever.
4. A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a cross-head with: (a) two guides which fit in and slide in slot of crossbar; (b) a jaw which, together with the stationary jaw of cross-bar, grips rim and top of can; and (c) an irregular shaped slot in which the stud of the lever fits and operates the crosshead, said slot being so shaped that it acts as a cam as soon as the jaws above mentioned grip the rim and top of can.
5. A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a mechanical combination of members whereby jaws firmly grip the rim and top of can, said members consisting of: 1. A lever with (a) I a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot passing through and held in place by a cross-bar, and upon which pivot the lever operates; and (b) a stud for fitting in slot of crosshead and for operation of the cross-head. 2. A cross-bar with: (a) a stationary jaw, being one of jaws for gripping rim and top of can; (b) a slot in which two guides of the cross-head fit and slide; and (c) a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot. 3. A cross-head with; (a) two guides which fit in and slide in slot of cross-bar; (b) a jaw which, together with stationary jaw of cross bar, grips rim and top of can; and (c) an irregular shaped slot in which the stud of the. lever fits and operates the cross-head. 4. A

6. A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a mechanical combination of members pierced in top of can, near margin of can, said members consisting of: 1. A lever with: (a) a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot passing through and held in place by a cross-bar, and upon which pivot the lever operates; (b) a stud for fitting in slot of cross-head and for operation of the cross-head; and (c) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can. 2. A crossbar with: (a) a stationary jaw, being one of jaws -for gripping rim and top of can; (b) a slot in which two guides of the cross-head fit and slide; and (c) a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot. 3. A cross-head with: (a) two guides which fit in and slide in slot of crossbar; (b) a jaw which, together with stationary jaw of cross-bar, grips rim and top of can; and (c) an irregular shaped slot in which the stud of the lever fits and operates the cross-head. 4. A binding pivot lever, slot in cross-head and pivot hole in crossbar.
7. A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a mechanical combination of members ((1) whereby jaws firmly grip the rim and top of can; (1)) whereby one hole is pierced in top of can, near margin of can; and (0) whereby two holes are pierce-d in top of can, in line of an approximate diameter of the can, situate at the opposite margins; said members 1. A lever with: (a) a pivot hole binding pivot passing through and held in place by a cross-bar, and upon which pivot the lever operates; (b) a stud for fitting in slot of cross-head and for operation of the cross-head; and (c) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can. 2; A piercing rod with: (a) "a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; (b) a T-headed stud connecting one end of for receiving piercing rod with cross-bar, andfitting in and sliding in a slot of the cross-bar; and (c) a pivot connecting the opposite end of piercing rod to the lever. 3. A cross-bar with: (a) a stationary jaw, being one of jaws for gripping rim and top of can; (b) a slot in which two guides of the cross-head fit and slide; (c) a slot in which a T- headed stud at one end of the piercing rod fits and slides; and (d) a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot. 4. A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a mechanical combination of members (a) whereby jaws firmly grip the rim and top of can; (b) whereby one hole is pierced in top of can, near margin of can; (0) whereby two holes are pierced in top of can, in line of an approximate diameter of the can, situate at the opposite margins; and (d) whereby the members are so adjusted that the device will fit either a small or large sized can; said members consisting of: 1. A lever with: (a) a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot passing through and held in place by a cross-bar, and upon which passing through pivot hole in pivot the lever operates; (b) a stud for fitting in slot of cross-head and for operation of the cross-head; (c) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; and (d) two pivot holes for adjusting piercing rod so that device will fit either small or large sized can. 2. A piercing rod with: (a) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; (b) a T-headed stud connecting one end. of piercing rod with cross-bar, and fitting in and sliding in a slot of the cross-bar; and (c) a pivot connecting the opposite end of pierc-' ing rod to the lever. 3. A cross-bar with: (a) a stationary jaw, being one of jaws for gripping rim and top of can; (b) a slot in which two guides of the cross-head fit and slide; (0) a slot in which a T-headed stud at one end of piercing rod fits and slides; and (d) two pivot holes for adjusting binding pivot and assembled parts so that device will fit either small or large sized can. 4. A cross-head with: (a) two guides which fit in and slide in slot of cross-bar; (b) a jaw which, together with stationary jaw of cross-bar, grips rim and top of can; and (c) an irregular shaped slot in which the stud of the lever fits and operates the cross-head. 5. A binding pivot passing through pivot hole in lever, slot in cross-head and pivot hole in crossbar.
9. A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a mechanical combination of members (a) whereby jaws firmly grip rim and top of can; (17) whereby one hole is pierced in top of can, near margin of can; (0) whereby two holes are pierced in top of can, in line of an approximate diameter of the can, situate at the opposite margins; ((1) whereby the members are so adjusted that the device will fit either a small or large sized can; and (e) whereby a rolled over upper edge of a lever, at right angle to its side, will cover working parts of device and also form a more convenient surface upon which to place hand; said members consisting of: 1. A lever with: (a) a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot passing through and held in place by a cross-bar, and upon which pivot the lever operates; (in) astud for fitting in slot of cross-head and for operation of the cross-head;
(c) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; (d) two pivot holes for adjusting piercing rod so that device will fit either small or large sized can; and (e) a rolled over upper edge, at right angle to side of lever, for covering working parts of device and also to form a broader surface upon which to place hand. 2. A piercing rod with: (a) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; (b) a T-headed stud connecting one end of piercing rod with cross-bar, and fitting in and sliding in a slot of the cross-bar; and (c) a pivot connecting the opposite end of piercing rod to the lever. 3. A cross-bar with: (a) a stationary jaw, being one of jaws for gripping rim and top of can; (b) a slot in which two guides of the cross-head fit and. slide; (0) a slot in which a T-headed stud at one end of piercing rod fits and slides; and (d) two pivot holes for adjusting binding pivot and assembled parts so i 3 that device will fit either a small or large sized can. 4. A cross-head with: which fit in and slide in slot of cross-bar; (b) a jaw which, together with stationary jaw of cross-bar, grips rim and top of can; and (c) an irregular shaped slot in which the stud of the lever fits and operates the cross-head. 5. A binding pivot passing through pivot hole in 1ever, slot in cross-head and pivot hole in crossbar.

A two-hole can opener of the class described comprising a mechanical combination of members (a) whereby jaws firmly grip the rim and top of can: (1)) whereby one holeis pierced in top of can, near'margin of can; (0) whereby two holes are pierced in top of can, in line of an approximate diameter of thecan, situate at the opposite margins; (01) whereby the members are so adjusted that the device will fit either a small or large sized can; (e) whereby a rolled over upper edge of a lever, at right angle to its side, will cover working parts of device and also form a more convenient surface upon which to place hand; and (fl whereby a leverand the extension of a cross-bar can be gripped by the hand and fingers for conveniently applying the pressure; said members consisting of: 1 A lever with: (a) a pivot hole for receiving binding pivot passing through and held in place by a cross-bar, and upon which pivot the lever operates; (b) a stud for fitting in slot of crosshead and for operation of the cross-head; (c) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; ((1) two pivot holes for adjusting piercing rod so that device will fit either small or large sized can; and (c) a rolled over upper edge, at right angle to side of lever, for covering working parts of device and also to form a broader surface upon which to place hand. 2. A piercing rod with: (a) a tooth for piercing one of holes in top of can; (b) a T-headed stud connecting one end of piercing rod with cross-bar, and fitting in and sliding in a slot. of the cross-bar; and (c) a pivot connecting the opposite end of piercing rod to the lever. 3. A cross-bar with: (a) a stationary jaw, being-one of jaws for gripping rim and top of can; (b) a slot in which two guides of the cross head fit and slide; (0) a slot in which a T-headed stud at one end of piercing rod fits and slides; (d) two pivot holes for adjusting binding pivot and assembled parts so that device will fit either a small or large sized can; and (e) an extension of the cross-bar itself to a point corresponding to the termination of the'lever when down for gripping with fingers when pressing down lever. 4. A cross-head with: (a) two guides which fit in and slide in slot of cross-bar; (b) a jaw which, together with stationary jaw of cross-bar, grips rim and top of can; and (c) an irregular shaped slot in which the stud of the lever fits and operates the cross-head. 5. A binding pivot passing through pivot hole in lever, slot in cross-head and pivot hole in cross-bar.
