J. P. M CREADY SCREW CAP REMOVER Filed Sept. 16, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor If F. MZreaziy Patented Sept. 1, 1936 sir STATES PATENT OFFICE;
1 Claim.
This invention is a device for facilitating the removal of screw caps from jars, and particularly for facilitating the removal of the threaded cap of Mason jars and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and easily operated form of wrench particularly adapted for the purpose above mentioned, and which also includes as an integral part thereof a can opener and a crimped bottle cap remover.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages, will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is an upper side view in elevation of the improved form of wrench.
Figure 2 is a perspective view thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the movable jaw of the wrench.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a cam equippe lever.
Figure 5 is an end 'elavational view of the I wrench showing the same applied to a screw cap.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention.
Figure '7 is a perspective view of an end portion of a shank forming part of the second form of ing a flat elongated shank It! provided at one end with a handle ll.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive the shank ID at the free end thereof has integral therewith a laterally extending'jaw 52 that is in a plane offset to the plane of the shank ill and is connected with the front of the shank by a narrow web l3 that extends at right angles to the plane of the shank and is integral with the shank l0 and the jaw l2. The
jaw I2 is slightly tapered and adjacent its free at one corner, are connected together by a substantially U-shaped tooth 20 and at a relatively opposite corner and for a considerable part of the length thereof are connected by an integral toothed jaw 2| (see Figure 3). The tooth 20 of the slide I9 matches the teeth I! on the shank, whereby to hold the slide IS in the required ad justed position. The jaw 2l is toothed to match the teeth of the jaw l2 for clamping between said jaws the screw cap of the jar.
A cam 22 formed integrally one one end of a handle or lever 23 is pivotally connected to the slide I9 as at 24 at the end of the slide equipped with the jaw 2|.
When the movable jaw, that is, the jaw 2| provided on the slide I9 is in locked position, the parts assume the position shown, as for example in Figure l, the shank I! being held between the tooth 20 and the cam 22. When it is required to adjust the movable jaw 2|, the lever 23 is rotated in a direction outwardly or away from the shank l0 whereby provision is made for releasing the tooth 20 and permitting the slide to be moved along the shank ID to adjust the jaw 2| to accommodate the particular jar cap or work,
therewith are made secure by pressing the lever 23 inwardly to the position shown in Figure 1 so that cam 22 and tooth 20 thus engage with the shank ID in a manner to lock the slide l9 and the jaw 2| carried thereby.
By having the jaw l2 offset from and parallel to the plane of the shank ID, and the bottle cap remover [5 arranged substantially coplanar with the shank I0 it will be seen that the shank I0 and the bottle cap remover' l5 rest on top of the screw cap 24 that is to be removed from the jar 25 and with the toothed face of the jaw l2 engaging the periphery of the cap 24, the
cap 24 thus provides a support for the jaw.
equipped end of the shank ID permitting quicker action on the part of the operator in adjusting the jaw 2| and the clamping thereof at the required adjusted position.
The form of the invention shown in Figures 6 to 8 inclusive is used in substantially the same manner as is the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive. However, in the second form of the invention, that is, in the form of the invention shown in Figures 6 to 8 inclusive, instead of having the fixed jaw integral with the shank, said jaw indicated by the reference numeral I2 is integral with an attaching plate 26 in the same manner as the jaw I2 is integral with the shank I0. Also, the bottle cap remover after which the slide l8 and jaw 2i associated I5 is integral with the jaw l2 in the same manner as is the bottle cap remover l5 integral with jaw l2. In the modified form of the invention, the plate 26 is adapted to be secured to the free end of the shank ID by rivets or any other suitable fastening means 21, and integral with the plate 26 at the edge thereof opposite to the jaw I2 is a can opener blade 28.
What is claimed is: Y
A wrench of the class describedcomprising an elongated shank having teeth at its rear side, a stationary jaw connected at one end to the front side of the shank, said jaw having a portion'in a plane offset from the plane of the shank and having an inwardly extending projection at the outer end thereof, lying substantially in the r shank and the bight of the movable jaw between the opening and the other end having teeth thereon to cooperate with the'teeth on the firstmentionedj aw and a handle pivoted at said other end of the jaw between the flanges of the channel and provided with a cam at its pivoted end for engaging the front edge of the shank.
