Description

Patented Aug. 28, i923.
i einen stares EDWARD E. CEEA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TDGR.
.application filed February 27, 1922. Serial Eo. 539,680.
My invention relates to improvements in tools, and more particularly to'an improved wrench for removing the caps of Mason jars and the'like, and which may also be used for various other purposes, as .for removing corks and crown caps, from bottles, opening cans, cracking nuts, etc. @ne of the objects of my invention is to provide a tool as above described, having means for adjusting the object-gripping portions thereof so that various sizes of objects may be handled thereby.. The invention has among its other objects the production of a device of the kind described which is simple, convenient, coinpact, economical, durable, reliable and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.. Many other objects and advantages oi the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given. i
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and com bination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
lin the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substan tially on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.; i,
Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and l Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
ln the drawings, wherein l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, there is shown a wrench comprising a pair of members 1 and 2 -pivotall and adjustably connected together. Fac of said members es illustrated has a handle portion 3, a jaw or head portion 4 and a laterally oli?- set portion 5 and 6, on the members 1 and 2 respectively, beyond said head portions.
The head portions are formed with arcuate' recesses 7, so'that when the parts 1 and are 4ivotally assembled as shown, the registering recesses 7-7 will form an ob ect-receiv- -ing' opening therebetween. In or er to more tirmly grip the obj heads 4 of the too the bounding gripping edges of the recesses have serrations or teeth 8 formed therealong, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1. It will be noted that these teeth are not sharp, but ilat so that they will firmly grip the cover without denting or marring it. One or more preferably smaller auxiliary object-receiving openings may be formed between the recesses 7 7 and the offset extensions 5 and 6 by forming pairs olf' cooperating recesses 9-9 with teeth thereon similar to themain recesses Zr-''.
@ne of offset extensions, as for instance the part 5, has an elongated slot or opening 10 therethrough, and opening into said slot are a series or spaced offset notches ll. A pin 12 is secured to the other extending part 6, said pin being slidable in the slot l() so that itA may be moved into either oi the notches 11. The pivotal connection may be `located as desired and be ot any preferable construction. Thus there is provided an adjustably pivotal connection at one end whereby the object-receiving openingsv may be enlarged or decreased in size to accommodate the various sizes of objects to be gripped betryeen the gripping edges of the jaws.
The purpose of the auxiliary opening 9, 9 is to remove small caps or covers from bottles or jars, or any other type of container and to'remove corks or the like therefrom, and they may also be used tor the purpose of cracking the shells of nuts, it so desired.
ect between the jaws or A bottle-opening prog or hook 13 may be formed at one end of the recess 'l' in one of the members, as shown, in the member 2, whereby crown caps or the like may be removed. A can opener knife blade 15 may be secured to the inner edge of one of the cured to said handle in any well known man-- ner, as by welding, or by .a rivet 16 as shown. The can opener does not interfere with the other uses of the device, as it is on the inner side ofthe handles. A knife Sharpener 17 and a cork screw 18 may also be secured on the handle portion of the device, preferably on the inner side thereof, as shown.
ln order to reinforce or stitlen the operating handles and the heads of the tool, there is provided a flange 14 bounding the edges of said parts. This also makes the devlce more comfortable in the hand. Thus there is provided a tool which is extremely strong and sturdy in construction, easy to operate, and
handles, if so desired, said blade being sethe preferred embodiment of the invention which may be adjusted to accommodate various sizes of Mason -ars, caps, corks or the like, and which may a be used for the purpose ot cracking nuts and removing crown caps from bottles or opening tin or like cans.
.While the parts are pivotally and adjustably connected together, 1t will be noted that in iting myself to the exact form, construction,
arrangement and combination ot parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
, lin a tool ot the kind described and in combination, a pair of sheetimetal members each comprising a handle, a jaw portion, and
a portion beyond said .jaw extending lateraliy thereof, each of said jaw portions having-a main and an auxiliary arcua recess formed therein, those of one gaw registering meente with those oit the other so that when assembled there will be formed a plurality of pairs of spaced object-receiving gripping openings between the registering recesses of both members, said recesses having serrated edges, one of said laterally extending portions beyond the jaw having an elongated slot longitudinally thereof with a series of notches oi'settherefrom and communicating therewith, the other of said longitudinally extending portions having a pin slidably engageablein said slot and movable into either ot said notches, whereby said object-receiving recesses may be adjustably varied in size, said members provided with a flange along the bounding edges oi" said handle portions to form a channeland provided with a flange along the outer edgesof the jaw portion so 'that said portion will be reinforced and suitable tools may be carried by said handles.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD E. erna.
