ADJUSTABLE JAR-COVER OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that we, JOHN A. McLnoo and ELLA A. DAUTOR, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Jar-Cover Openers, in which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.-
Our invention relates to improvements in adjustable jar cover openers, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of our invention is to provide an adjustable jar cover opener that can be readily and quickly adjusted to positively grip the top of any bottle, jar, or the like in order to remove the same.
A further object of our invention is to provide a device of the type described that is simple in construction and operation, has few moving parts, and is not likely to easily get out of order.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the a pended claims. A
Our invention is i lustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the device,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device.
In carrying out our invention we provide a handle 1 which flares outwardly at one end into' a head 2. The head 2 has a cut 3 extending inwardly from its end. A jaw 4 is composed of two halves 5 and 6 which are respectively bent downwardly to form an acute angle with the head 2, and to form an obtuse angle with ecah other, the vertex of the obtuse angle being at the out 3 and the halves 5 and 6 tapering inwardly from that point (see Figs. 1 and 2). At the opposite end of the handle 1 is a hole 7 which acilitates the hanging of the device on a nail, or the like. Extending from the head 2 to the other end of the handle 1 is a longitudinal raised portion 8. The raised portion 8 of the handle 1 is on the opposite side of the handle 1 with respect to the jaw 4.
A second jaw 9 is slidably held by the handle 1 and is adapted to cooperate with the jaw 4 for a purpose hereinafter set forth. The movable jaw 9 comprises a body portion 10 on which is mounted a pin 11 that extends in the same direction as the jaw halves 5 and 6. The front part of the jaw 9 is composed of two parts 12 and 13 which are bent downwardly in substantially the same manner as the two halves 5 and 6 of the jaw 4. It will be seen that the outer ends of the aws 4 and 9 touch each other when they are in the position shown in Fig. 1, and that both the jaws 4 and 9 bend toward each other at their bottom edges. The body por tion 10 of the movable jaw 9 also has a pair of laterally extending ears 14 and 15 which are bent around the handle 1 and have their edges 16 and 17 adapted to engage the sides of the raised portion 8. The movable jaw 9 is therefore guided by its ears l4 and 15, which engage the raised portion 8, as it slides on the handle 1. It will also be noticed that both the jaws 4 and 9 have their inner surfaces corrugated to permit the jaws to grip the top of the bottle more securely.
djacent the movable jaw 9 is a slidable member 18 which incloses a portion of the handle 1 and has its free ends secured to each other by a pin 19. A pawl 20 is pivotally mounted on said pin and is disposed within the free ends of the slidable member 18 so that its head 21 is adapted to engage a series of teeth 22 which form a part of the side of the handle 1 that is adjacent the pawl 20. A spring 23 is secured to the pawl 20 and bears against the edge of the handle 1 so that the pawl 20 is yieldingly kept in engagement with the teeth 22. The member 18 is guided along the handle 1 by means of a rivet 24 which is slidably disposed in a longitudinally extending slot 25 in the ban dle 1 and is secured to the member 18.
Situated on the same side of the handle 1 as the jaws 3 and 9 is a second handle 26 which is pivoted on the rivet 24 and has a slot 27 that is adapted to register with the pin 11. The slot 27 is so positioned that when the movable handle 26 is brought into alinement with the handle 1, this movement will slide the movable jaw 9 toward the jaw 4.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. The handle 26 is swung away from the handle 1 and is also moved forwardly along the handle 1 until the movable jaw 9 engages one side of a removable cap 28 which is secured to a bottle or the like 29, while the other jaw 4 engages the other side of the cap. The pawl 20 has engaged one of the teeth 22 so that the handle 26 which carries the jaw 9 cannot slide back along the handle 1 unless the pawl 20 is manually disengaged from the teeth against the tension of the spring The handle 26 is thereupon swung on its pivot 24: toward the handle 1 so as to aline both the handles. This movement forces the aw 9 toward the jaw 4: so that they grip the top 28 tightly. A simple turn in the right direction will unscrew the top 28 from the bottle 29. After the top has been removed the jaws l and 9 are loosened from their hold upon the top, by manually disengaging the pawl 20 from the eeth.
The device as just explained is very simple in operation and has few movable parts. As stated before it can be quickly adjusted to remove the top from any sized bottle.
it is obvious that changes can be made in the construction of the device without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention.
We claim:
1. An adjustable jar cover opener comprising a handle having a jaw at one end, a
second jaw slidahly mounted on said handle, a slidable member mounted on said handle adjacent said nd f ve yieidable locking means carried said slidable member adapted to engage "2i" zh'st named handle, a second handle voaaliy mounted on said slidable member and adapted to engage said second jaw, and means carried by said seeond handle whereby a movement of sait. second handle will siide said second name jaw toward said first named jaw.

An adjustable jar cover opener oom prising; a handle having a jaw at one end and a plurality of teeth, a second jaw slidably mounted on said handle and having a pin projecting therefrom a slidahle member mounted on said handle a pawl pivotall mounted in said slidable member and yie td ingly held in engagement with said teeth, a second handle pivotally mounted on said slidable member and having a slot at one end adapted to engage said pin for "forcing said second named jaw toward said first named jaw.
