Description
No. 893,405. PATENTED JULY 14, 1908. J. A. WEISBEGK & E. JOHNSON.
JAB. OPENING WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 25.1907.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. WEISBECK AND EDWARD JOHNSON, OF ALDEN, NEW YORK.
JAR-OPENING WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J osnrn A. WEISBEGK and EDWARD JOHNSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Alden, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Jar Opening Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improved wrench for opening fruit jars and the like, and its object is to provide one which will be simple, compact and handy and which may be readily adjusted for application to jars of different sizes.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The above and other objects of the invention are attained in its preferred embodiment illustrated in the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section through one of the aws. The device has the form of a air of pliers and comprises two crossed hand levers 1, 2, united by a pivot 3. The long inner arms of said levers are shaped to provide handles and their short outer arms 4 terminate in outwardly curved jaws 5 and have transverse slots 6 to slidably receive a clamping band 7 which is preferably of leather or the like. On the outer faces of the arms 4 are arranged loops 8 through which the ends of the band or strap 7 are (passed as shown. Also provided upon sai faces of the arms 4 between said loops are ins or studs 9 adapted to enter apertures 10 ormed in the ends of the band and arranged at suitable distances apart so that the band may be adjusted to permit of its engagement with a jar or jar top of almost any diameter. It will be seen that his construction provides a simple and e ective means for alterin the size of the loop formed by the band 7 an that such adjustment may be readil effected by lifting the portions of the ban between the loops to free them from the pins 8, then shiftin the ends of the band in either direction an finally pressing said ortions inwardly so that the ins enter the esired a ertures 10. It will e further noted that t construction will effectively unite the ends of the band to the jaws so that the band cannot slip when the device is in use. By making the band 7 of leather or similar flexible material and curving the ends or jaws 5 of the levers as shown, the band will accommodate itself to the screw cap of the jar or other object with which it is engaged so as to reduce the liability of breaking the jar and injuring the screw cap to the minimum.
On the handle end of the lever 2 we preferably pivot a corkscrew 11 and provide a tin can opener 12.
On the handle end of the lever 1 we preferably form a spur 21 adapted for use in removing ordinary seal stopper plugs from beer bottles and the like and a hook 22 which is adapted for use in removing crown stoppers or caps from beer bottles and the like.
From the foregoing it will be seen that our invention provides a tool by means of which the tops of fruit jars or the like of any size may be tf uickly and easily opened without danger o breaking or injuring them and its combination with the other devices above mentioned make it an exceedingly handy and compact combination tool.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is:
1. The combination of a pair of pivoted hand levers terminating with outwardly curved 'awe and formed with transverse slots, a exible clamping band engaged with and covering the inner faces of said jaws and having its ends passed through said slots and means for ad'ustably securin one or both of the ends of t e band to said evers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a pair of pivoted hand levers terminating with outwardly curved jaws and formed with transverse slots, guide loops arranged u on the outer faces of said levers, outwar ly pro'ecting pins'upon said faces of the levers an adjacent to said loops and a flexible clam in band formed at its ends with longitu ina series of apertures, the ends of said band be ing enga ed with the inner faces of said jaws an passed through said transverse slots and said loops, and the pins upon said levers being inserted in the a ertures in said ends of the band to adjustab unite the latter and the levers, substantia ly as set forth.
JOSEPH A. WEISBEOK. EDWARD JOHNSON.
