Description

T. :r. BRONSON & T. N. JEWSBURY.
WHIPS. No.'1 69,768. Patented N'ov.9,1875.
NITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS J. BRON SON AND THOMAS- N. JEWSBURY, OF JACKSONVILLE, ILL.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHYIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. "59,768, dated November 9, 1875 application filed August 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that we, THoMAs J. BRONSON and THOMAS N. J EWSBURY, of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whips; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the combination of the lash with the stock and handle of whips of the kind usually called drovers whips and its object is to procure a whip so constructed and arranged that a broken stock may easily be taken out and a new one inserted in its place without the necessity of unbraiding the lash, thereby saving much inconvenience, time, and labor.
In the drawing, Figure l is a section taken through the middle of the handle, stock, and lower part of lash; and Fig. 2 shows the fastener or finisher developed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the handle of the whip, and B is the stock. The latter is turned off conically, and has a broad circumferential depression or groove, b, below theconical knob above the handle, as shown. Into this groove surrounding the stock is then sewed the fastener (J, which consists of a piece of leather formed, as shown in Fig. 2, with a butt-end, c, and the rest cut up into strands c. This fastener is sewed onto the stock in such a manner that the butt end 0 will rest against the under side of the conical knob which forms the top of the stock; next, the butt d of the belly-piece D is sewed around the groove 11 in the stock,
above the fastener O, and the respective buttends 0 and d are then united by sewing, the
seam which unites the two lying closely up to the groove- 0 in the stock. By this seam the belly-piece D is made to form an integral part of the fastener C, so that when the fastener is detached from the stock and handle the bellypiece D is detached with it. Lastly, the buttend e of the lash E proper is sewed over the butt d of the belly-piece D in such a man'- ner that it will not closely encircle the circumferential groove b, but may bedrawn out, when detached from the fastener C, over the knob which forms the top of the stock. It is secured in its position by having the lower parts of the strands of which it is composed braided into the corresponding strands c of the fastener 0, so as to make a good finish.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the whip herein described is made by first securing the fasteneror finisher 0 around the handle B; second, the belly-piece or filling D of the lash is sewed onto the buttend of the fastener, so that the latter forms, so to speak, a prolongation or continuation of the former; and, thirdly, the strands which form the lash proper are braided into the strands of the fastener G.
Having thus described our invention, we
