NiE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRAIlVLM. TURNER, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.308,017, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed August 8, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
I Be it known that I, EPHRAIM M. TURNER, of Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is more particularly designed to be applied to whips used by stockfarmers or those employed by them, and others of like calling. It is not restricted, however, to any particular kind of whip, which may either be long or short, and be variously finished at its outer end, either with a tail or with an attached lash for mere riding, or for driving stock or cattle and other purposes, as desired.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a whip embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a mainly sectional longitudinal View, upon a larger scale, of the combined knife and hamdle portion ofthe whip; and Fig. 3, a front View of the same.
A indicates the body of the whip, which is mainly composed of a steel wire or core, I), of tapering construction or straight, as desired, and of a vulcanized-rubberand cotton covering, 0, similar to that now used for incasing or extension, d, at its back end, onto which the handle 0 screws. The handle 0 is in the form of and constitutes a clasp or pocket knife, and may be detached and carried in the pocket when the whip is not in use or be detached from'the body of the whip for use at other times, as desired. The exterior of the case of said knife should be of rounded configuration, and may have knobs or projections at its ends, to make it convenient to use as a handle to the whip when attached to the body thereof, by screwing its knob-end e,which is constructed to form a screw-socket, on the screw-shank d. Said combined or convertible knife and whip-handle may have any number of blades made to shut down into the case, subject to the control of an ordinary backspring, f. Thus it may have an ordinary or camp knifeblade, g,-and an awl-blade, 1, provided with an eye near its point and sharpened on its opposite edges, as awl-blades are ordinarily constructed. Such a knife attachment to the whip, forming also a handle thereto, will be found exceedingly convenient when camping out and under a variety of circumstances, ineluding the repairing of the harness or girth or stirrup straps of the saddle of the rider using the whip, especially when one of the blades of the knife is an awl one, as described, as not only may the strap to be repaired be pierced by said blade, but a thread or piece of string passed through the eye of the blade be projected at the same time through the strap to do the necessary sewing or repairing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters,
Patent, is
The combination, with the spring-wire core I) and rubber compound covering 0 of the body A of the whip, and the metallic coupling B, of the detachable screw whip -handle 0,
constructed to form a clasp-knife, substantially as shown and described.
EPHRAIM M. TURNER. Witnesses:
A. GREGORY, (l. SEDGwIoK.
