UNITE STATES PATENT ()rrroua HENRY MULLEN AND JAMES NOBLE, JR, OF \VESTFlELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,162, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed October 11, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY MULLEN and JAMES NOBLE, J r., of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Whips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improvement, the braiding being shown in section and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the core. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the whip enlarged, taken through the line as m, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to keep the tips of the whips erect, and also to economize stock and lessen the cost of manufacture.
A represents the lower part of the whip-core, which is made of rawhide or leather, and may be square or of any other desired form. The upper end of the rawhide or leather A is tapered to a point, and is inserted in the split lower end of the upper part, B, of the core. The upper part, B, ot'the core is made of whalebone, and its lower end is split to receive the tapered upper end of the lower part, A, of the said core. The lower ends of the split upper part, B, of the core are tapered, as shown in Fig. 1, so that thelap or splice of the two parts (ModeL) A B will be smooth and even. The core A B thus formed is surrounded with strips of rattan 0, or other suitable material, and the whole is then covered with braiding D in the usual manner. If desired, the split can be formed in the upper end of the rawhide or leather lower part of the core, and the lower end of the whalebone upper part tapered to a point and inserted in the said split lower part.
With this construction, the upper part, B, of the core, being made of whalebone, will remain erect, and will not bend over as when made of rawhideorothersimilarmaterial. Bythisconstruction all the advantages of a whalebone core will be obtained, and the cost of construc tion will be greatly lessened, as the upper part,
B, of the core can be made of short, and consequently less expensive, pieces of whalebone.
We are aware that an outer braiding I and rattan sections are not new; but
What we claim is- A whip whose core is formed of the leather or rawhide piece A at the butt and the whaleboue piece B at the lash end, as shown and described, whereby the advantage of a whalebone whip is retained, while the cost is greatly reduced.
