PATENT OFFICE.
" GAMALIEL KING, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WHIP-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 244,619, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed February 2, 1881.
- Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whip-Stocks, of
which the following is a specification.
Whip-stocks have heretofore been made of rattan provided with cores of whalebone and other material.. My invention relates to the manufacture of stocks of that general character; and it consists in a sectional rattan cover with a core formed of a cord of fibrous material, the same being very flexible, durable, and inexpensive.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a whip-stock of my improved construction. Fig. 2-is a sectional side view of a portion of the stock in larger size; and Fig. 3 is atransverse section of the stock.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts. I
A is the stock, made of rattan in two or more longitudinal sections that inclose the core I), as usual. The core I) is a cord of fibrous ma- This core ex- (ModeL) .tends from the smaller end partially or entirely through the stock lengthwise, and projects more or less, as desired, beyond the smaller end.
In'making the core the bundle of loose threads is drawn througha tube or aperture in a vessel containin g glue or cement, so that they become saturated. They are then passed through a braiding or windingmachine, which forms the covering. When dry this core is strong and flexible to a high degree.
. 1 do not limit myself to the cord formed of 40 parallel threads, as a twisted cord of fibrous material may be used. I prefer the untwisted cord, as it has greater stiffness in proportion to diameter, and the separate fibers are not liable to open when the cord is bent.
I am aware that it isnot broadly new to malse'a whip of a cloth core and a Vulcanizable composition forming the cover; but
What I claim is- A whip formed of a central cord and sectional rattan cover, as shown and described.
