UNITED STATES JULIUS G. WHITE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAIR-CURLING DEVICE.
Application filed April 4, 1922. Serial No. 549,482
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS G. IVHITE, a citizen of Canada, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hair curling devices and has for its principal object to provide means formed integral with one of the arms of the curler and adapted to prevent a cutting or breaking of the hair of the user when a curl is being formed on the device.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel form of closure means for detachably connecting the two ends of the arms together while the device is in use such means being so constructed that accidental displacement of the two arms is reduced to a minimum.
A further object of this invention is to produce a device of the character described which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, highly serviceable in use and one which is strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the device in an unlocked position,
- Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device in a closed position, and
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
I am aware that other hair curlers or wavers have been devised which consists of a narrow strip of resilient material folded upon itself to form two opposing arms upon one of which the hair is usually wound so that the curl is formed with the other of the arms adapted to be engaged by the first mentioned arm. These curling devices as a rule have a tendency to cause a breaking or cutting of the hair when the hair contacts with the sharp edges of the hair supporting arm. To overcome this disadvantage and to provide the trade with a device which will avoid the tendency of a breaking or cutting of the hair I have constructed one arm of the curler of such form as to overcome the above mentioned disadvantage and have also separated two of the arms and have thus provided a novel hinged connection, whereby should one of the arms become broken or useless a new arm can be readily substituted without making the entire device worthless.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a resilient strip preferably made of spring stock which has formed thereon a lateral extension 6 which acts as a guard, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
Hingedly connected at 7 to the end opposite to that on which the guard is mount ed is one extremity of a substantially straight arm 8 which has its marginal edges 9 and 10 folded for the purpose of not only reenforcing the arm 8 but also preventing a cutting or breaking of the hair of the user when the said hair is desired to be curled. This arm 8 terminates at one end thereof in a pointed extremity 11 which is adapted to be received beneath the guard 6 for the pur pose of holding the device in a closed position when a curl is being formed.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of par-ts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A hair curler comprising a pair of arms, one of said arms being resilient and slotted adjacent one extremity and having formed on its opposite extremity a lateral extension, the other of said arms being provided with a pointed free extremity and having horizontally extending beads formed substantially throughout the length of the arm,
the last mentioned arm being reduced adj acent its opposite extremity and continuing. into an integrally rounded portion adapted to be received in the slot of the resilient arm.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JULIUS e. WHITE.-
