Description

C. 0. ELLERT.
HAIR WAVER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 26,19t9- Patefited Aug. 17, 1920.
CHARLES O. ELLERT, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HAIB-WAVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
Application filed July 26, 1919. Serial No. 313,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Cinemas 0. ELLERT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Wavers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to hair waving de vices, and has for its object to provide a hair waver peculiarly designed to become easily positioned and engaged with the hair and to readily permit the removal of the hair waver from the hair with the greatest ease and despatch.
Another object is to provide an improved hair waver that permits its ready adaption as an ordinary hair pin employed for the dressing of ladies? hair after the removal of the waved hair from the said improved hair waver.
still further object is to provide a device of this nature which is simple in construction, effective in operation and cheap to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters referto like parts throughout the several views.
Figure I, is an elevation of the improved hair waver.
Fig. II, is a similar view, but with the separable locking means removed.
Fig. III, is a side elevation of Fig. II.
Fig. IV, is a perspective of the separable locking means used in the improved hair waver.
Fi V, is a section on line 6-6, Fig. IV, and *ig. V1 is a modification of Fig.
As shown the hair waver is designed from a single length of material or made in any form or material, and embodies the spaced parallel limbs 1 which may or may not be corrugated for a portion of their length as at 2, to assist 'in engaging the hair.
Each limb 1, at a suitable point as at 4, near its lower end is formed to have suitable diverging or flared ends as 3, 3", and is provided with a suitable flared or extending foot or similar projection as 3". The flare ends 3, 3, are provided with sultable corru-' gations or like means 5, 5. The head of the hair waver as at 6, may be suitably formed or shaped to any desired design.
The diverging or flared ends 3, 3", of the limbs l, are adapted to engage with a separable or removable locking means as 7, ol suitable material as aluminum or'other light and non corrosive material. The separable or removable locking means 7, is of suitable size and length and formed to have at its opposite ends suitable holding means or like pro ectio1'1s 9, S), bent or shaped in any do siruble manner And at the curved or rounded ends 3, H, of the separable means 7, suitable corrugations or like means '10, 10, are provided to engage with the corruga t ons 5, 5 in the flared ends 3, 3, of the limbs 1, of the hair waver; when said flared ends 3, 3, are placed within the separable locking means 7, the said corrugations 5, 5. of the flared ends 3, 3 engage and co-act with said corrugations 10, 10, of the separable locking means 7.
In event of the separable locking means 7, being made of celluloid or similar material, the said corrugations 10, may be used or a series of slots or openings 10", Fig. VI, is pro ided if desired instead of the corrugations 11'), Fig. IV. The corrugations 5, 5, of tho flared ends 3, 3, of limbs 1, being adapted to engage and (-0" act with the said slots or openings 10 The projections or extending foot 3", being preferably used to position the separable locking means 7, in event of the corrugations 5, 5", 10, 10, being dispensed with, as when a slight pressure is exerted by flared ends 3, 3 on the separable locking means 7 If desired a suitable opening 11, is provided in the face of the separable locking means 7 to save material of which the means is composed, or the opening may be used for and suitable purpose as occasion may require.
When the hair is placed to engage the limbs 1 of the hair waver for the purpose of wavin the hair, the flared ends 3, 3, are suitabl y pressed toward each other in a manner to permit the said flared ends 3, 3, to enter within the projections or holding means 9, 9, of the separable means 7, and in a manner to permit the corrugations 5, 5*, provided in said flared ends 3, 3, to engage with co-acting corrugations 10, 10, or like means provided in the separable locking means 7 and eliectively locking the hair waver. The entire means 7, may be pressed together as desired to secure any desired tension on the flared ends 3, 3, of limbs 1.
In opening or unlocking the hair waver, the separable or removable locking means 7. is removed by sliding or pulling it off and away from the said flared ends 3, 3, the corrugations 5. 5, in the said flared ends 3, 3, being adapted to permit such removal; or the said flared ends 3, 3, may be pressed toward each other and the said means 7, easily removed from the hair waver and laid aside for same use at anot her time, and the waved hair removed from the limbs 1.
lVhen it is desired to dress the hair or for any other purpose after the separable looking means 4, has been entirely removed from the flared ends 3, 3", and the waved hair has been disengaged from the limbs 1, of the hair wav r, the part A Fig. 2, of the hair waver may be easily and readily used as an ordinary hair pin employed for the dressing of ladies hai Vhile I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to exact details of construction herein shown and described, and change therein and modifica- 1'ion thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A hair waver comprising a hair pin having spaced parallel limbs provided with flared portions, integral holding means pro vided in said flared portions, and a separable locking means provided with co-acting means to engage with said holding means.
2. A. hair waver comprising an open loop member having spaced parallel limbs provided with flared portions, holding means provided in said flared portions, separable locking means adapted to engage with said holding means, and supplemental holding means including flared extreme ends for said flared portions.
A hair waver provided with flared portions, holding means provided in said flared portions, separable locking means adapted to engage with said'holding meansgand holding means provided in said locking means to co-aet in engagement with first said holding means.
4. A hair waver comprising a. hairpin having spaced parallel limbs provided with flared portions, locking means removably positioned on said flared portions, auxiliary holding means in said lotsking means, and co-acting auxiliary holding means in said flared portions adapted to engage with first said auxiliary holding means whereby when said locking means is removed the hair 'aver adapted for use as a hair pin for dressing the waved hair.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name in the presence of 'two subscribing witnesses.
