V LATCH. APPLICATION FILED JAN.3, I920.
Patented May 18, 1920.

LATCH.
Application filed January 3, 1920.
l) (/ZZ W'h0/17 ft may concern Be it known that I, Pn'rnn GAZZI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Latches, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to latches and more particularly to hasps adapted to be used upon railroad car doors and th-e like.
The objects and construction and arrangement of the various parts of this invention will be more readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawing and specification. The novel features of iny invention are more specifically pointed out in the accompanying claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is atop elevation of my latch.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation ofthe same.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on-the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4. ,is a section taken on the line 4- of Fig.3. 7
By referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it wi'll be-seen-thatl represents a car door and 2 represents the side wall of the said car. Upon the door is situated the strap 3 which is provided at one end with the loop 4 and is attached to the door by means of the screw 5. A hasp 6 having an aperture 7 registering with the loop 4 is carried by the strap 3. This hasp 6 tapers toward its end and is provided with the enlarged terminals 8.
The latch carrying strap 9 is attached to the wall 2 by means of the screws 10 and is provided with an offset portion 12 which terminates in a right angularly extending lip 13. This ofi'set portion 12 also has a finger 26'extending in alinement with itself and parallel to the body portion 9. No particular emphasis is desired to be laid on theshape of the latch carrying strap 9 as same may be bent to fit any desired surface upon which same is to be placed. The li 13 has the slot 16 and a mouth 15 leading therein. In the mouth 15 is situated the hook forming opening 17 A. plate 18 bent over upon itself so as to form similar sides is pivoted upon the lip 13 by means of the rivets 20 and is provided with an open portion 19 adapted to register with the slot 16 as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This plate is also provided with the opening 17 adapted Specification of Letterslatent. Patented fM ay {18 Serial No. 349,145.
to register with the hook shaped opening 17 in'the lip 13.
lVithin the openings '17-andthe hook 17 there is situated the bolt 24hav'ingthe heads 25. When this bolt 24 is in a position so as to register with-the hoolcopening 17 it will be seen that it will be impossible *to pivot the plate 18 upon its fulcrum 20, thereby holding the hasp 6 in-a locked position when. same isembedde'd-in the slot 16.
Situated upon either side of the plate 18 .is the latch 21 pivoted upon the rivet 22 and having an operating knob 23. The plate -or latch 21 is situated so as to engage the heads 25 of the bolt 24 so as to hold same in the slot 17', thereby holding phe iplate 18 in locked position upon the The above description relates to what I might call the preferred embodiment of my invention but I wish it understood that T may invert the arrangement described so as to "have the strap '3 :upon the right and the strap 9 :upon the left thereby causing the pivot 2011c :be situated upon the upper portions ofthe lip '13 and plate 18. II wish it also understood that I may make such changes in arrangement of construction and combination of parts as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a hasp strap and a latch carrying strap, said hasp strap terminating in a loop.
a hasp provided with an opening adapted to register with the loop of said hasp strap. said. hasp tapering toward its end and terminating in an enlargement, a right angularly extending lip provided upon said latch carrying strap, said lip provided with a vertical slot having a mouth leading thereto, a hook-shaped opening situated within said mouth, a plate bent over upon itself so as to form two similarly shaped side portions mounted upon said lip, said plate having an opening adapted to register with the vertical slot of said lip, and also a slot adapted to register with the hook-shaped opening provided in the mouth of said lip, a bolt having heads upon its extremity mounted in said last mentioned opening, means provided for holding said bolt in said hook shaped opening provided in the mouth of said lip and an aperture passing throughsaid plate and said lip for receiving a seal.
2. A device of the class described comprising a hasp strap and a latch carrying strap, said hasp strap terminating in a loop, a hasp provided with an opening adapted to register with the loop of said hasp strap, said hasp tapering toward its end and terminating in an enlargement, a right angularly extending lip provided upon said latch carrying strap, said lip provided with a vertical slot having a mouth leading thereto, a hook-shaped opening situated within said mouth, a plate bent over upon itself so as to form two similarly shaped side portions mounted upon said lip, said plate having an opening adapted to register with the vertical slot of said lip, and also a slot adapted to register with the hook-shaped opening provided in the mouth of said lip, a bolt having heads upon its extremity mounted in said last mentioned opening, a latch pivotally carried upon one side of said plate and provided with an operating knob, said latch adapted to engage the heads of said bolt for holding same in a locked position.
3. A device of the class described comprising a hasp strap and a latch carrying strap, a hasp carried by one end of said hasp strap, an enlargement provided upon the free end of said hasp, a right angularly extending lip provided upon said latch carrying strap, said lip provided with a vertical slot having a mouth leading thereto, a
' hooked shaped opening situated within said mouth, a plate bent over upon itself so as to form two similarly shaped side portions mounted upon said lip, said plate having an opening adapted to register with the hooked shaped opening provided in the mouth of said lip, a bolt having heads upon its extremity mounted in said last mentioned opening, a latch pivotally carried upon one end of said plate and provided with an operating knob, said latch adapted to engage the heads of said bolt for holding same in a locked position.
4. A device of the class described comprising a hasp strap and a latch carrying strap, a hasp loosely mounted upon the terminal of said hasp strap and provided with an enlargement upon its free terminal, a right angularly extending lip provided upon said latch carrying strap, said lip provided with a vertical slot having a mouth leading thereto, a hooked shaped opening situated within said mouth, a plate bent over upon itself so as to form two similarly shaped side portions mounted upon said lip, said plate having an opening adapted to register with the vertical slot of said lip, and also a slot adapted to register with the hook-shaped opening provided in the mouth of said lip, a bolt having heads upon its extremities mounted in said last mentioned opening, means for holding said bolt in said hook-shaped opening provided in the mouth of said lip.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
