SAFETY DOOR-FASTENER.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. REED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Door-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to door fasteners and particularly to improved safety fasteners, and has for an object the provision of a construction which will not be in the way when not in use, but will effectively resist opening the door beyond a certain extent when in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a safety device which will take the place of the ordinary door chain now in common use, but which may be adjustedto lock the door in a partially open position.

A further object is to provide a safety lock for doors in which coacting swinging members are used on the door j amb and on the door whereby these two members need not register or present a-flush surface when the door is closed in order that the parts may operate properly.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a door jamb, and 2 a door of any usual or preferred construction. Usually in connection with doors there is provided a lock of some kind which is operated by a knob or other suitable means, and in the case of outside doors quite often a short chain is provided so that the door may be opened a few inches, while still locked against the full opening. A chain of this nature serves the purpose of preventing opening a door beyond a certain extent, but has certain objections and limitations, as for instance it will not maintain the door open positively. The present invention is constructed to answer the purposes of an ordi nary lock chain and in addition other pur- Specification of Letters Patent.

poses, as for instance a means for locking the door in a partially opened position.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that a plate 3 is secured to the door jamb 1 by screws and is provided with a pair of upstanding ears 1 for accommodating the pintle 5 around which a spring 6 is coiled. This spring acts on one of the ears 4 and upon a locking tongue 7, for urging the lock ing tongue from the position shown in Fig. 1 to an opposite position against the jamb 1.. The locking tongue 7 is provided with ears 8 through which pintle o passes whereby said tongue is pivotally connected with plate 3 and is normally held by spring 6 against the jamb 1. The outer or free end of the tongue 7 is bent over at 9 for forming a stop which engages the link or bail 10. Notches 11 and 12 are provided in the tongue 7 near the hook end 9 so as to receive the locking arm 13, as indicated in Fig. 4, whereby the door 2 is positively locked in an open position.

Arranged on the door 2 is a base plate 14 which is held in place by screws or other suitable means, said base plate having cars 15 for receiving the outwardly flaring ends of the bail or link 10. A bent-up portion 16 is also provided arranged to act as a shoulder against which the bail or link 10 rests when in the position shown in Fig. 3. This position is necessary when it is desired to disconnect the tongue 7 from the link 10. This disconnection is necessa when it is desired to open the door 2 fully,

In operation after the plates 3 and 14 have been secured to the jamb and door respectively they are ready for use. Duringthe day or when not desired the tongue 7 is left resting against the jamb 1 so that the door may be opened and closed in the usual manner. At night or at any desired time when any one wishes to use the device the door 2 is closed and the link 10 moves over to the position shown in Fig. 3, after which tongue 7 is also moved over to the position shown in Fig. 3 and the link 10 swung slightly toward the edge of the door as indicated in Fig. 1. This causes the hook end 9 to interlock with the link 10 and cause the parts to assume the position shown in place only when as indicated in Fig. 2 whenever it is attempted to open the loor. Incase the door opened as shown in Fig. 2 and itcis then desired to open the door fully so as to let a person in, it is first necessary to close the door to discon- ,oany connecting said tongue to the door 'jamb, said means being arranged at the end opposite to said hook, a spring acting on said tongue for normally holdmg the tongue against said j arch, and a U-shaped member pivotally mounted on the door adjacent the jamb, the pivotal mounting of said U-shaped member being spaced from the door a suiticient distance to allow one end of the U-' shaped member to overlap the edge of the scribed oomprislng a tongue adapted to be door sufficiently to accommodate said tongue when the hook shaped end has been moved through the U -shaped member.

A door fastener of the character described comprising a tongue pivotally connected' with the door jamb, said tongue being' formed with a hook at the free end and a notch adjacent the hook,'a U-shaped member pivotally connected with said door andv adapted to overlap said tongue adjacent the U-shaped member when the door is partially open, and a pivota'lly mounted catch connected with the door and adapted to be moved into thenotch in the tongue for look ing the door in apartially open position.

3. A door catch of the character described, comprising a tongue adapted to be pivotally connected with a door j amb, said tongue having a hook at the free end and a notch lap the edge of the door, said overlappingbeing sufiicient to accommodate'said tongue but not the hook, and a catch pivotally mounted on said plate adaptedto be moved over to engagement with the notch and the tongue for locking the door against movement when partially open. 7

A door fastener or" the character depivotally connected with a door jamb, said tongue having a hook at the outer end, a plate adapted to be connected with thedoor, the plate being formed with a pair of ears spaced from the edge of the door and a pair of lugs adjacent the ears, and a U-shaped member journaled in said ears and adapted tor'est on said lugs when swung to one 6X5 treme position and to interlock the said" tonguelwhen' swung tothe other position.
