HARMON S. PALMER, OF NORVELL, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,099, dated May 21, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, H. S. PALMER, of Norvell, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sockets for Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fence post, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I willnow proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and
Fig. 2 a bottom view, of my post-socket.
A represents the base of myfence-post, made round, of brick-clay, potters-clay, or other suitable material, burned in the usual manner to the required hardness. The form of the baseA being round, it can readily be pushed into a hole made with a common post-auger.
Vertically through this base is a central opening, into which a wooden post, B, is inserted and cemented with any suitable water-proof cement, the base thus forming, as it were, a socket for the reception of the post. The post Bis not inserted all the way to the bottom of the socket A, but leaves a space, a, at the bottom, which space forms an air-chamber at the bottom of the post, and, in conjunction with vertical grooves 12 I) made in the sides of the central passage, and forming ventilating-holes at the sides of the post, establish a circulation of air to aid the cement in keeping moisture from the post. The lower end of the post B may be made tapering, with the passage in the socket A to correspond, which would prevent the post from going into the socket any all constructed and arranged'substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HABMQN S. PALMER.
