UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS JASPER SAXON AND WILLIAM HARTFORD JAMES, OF COLFAX, VASHINGTON TERRITORY.
FENCE-POST.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,198I dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed June 14,1888. Serial No. 277,042. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SILAS JASPER SAXON and W'ILLIAM HARTFORD JAMES, both of Colfax, in the county of \Vhitman and Territory of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification, reference being had. to the aunexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved fence-post. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line a; x in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line y y in Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on line .e ,e in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all theviews.
Our invention is an improvement in the class of fence posts having a metallic foot piece which enters the ground, and is provided with a socket adapted to receive and support the body of the post.
Ourinvention consists, broadly stated, in the means of connection between such foot-piece and the body of the post-that is to say, a thin metalI tube is driven into the lower end of the wooden body of the post, and thus forms a light, cheap, but strong, firm, and durable attachment and extension of the same. This tube fits somewhat loosely in the socket formed in the foot-piece, so that the body of the post may be easily and quickly attached to and detached from said foot-piece, as required in the construction or repair or removal of the fence whereof such post forms a part.
Referring to the drawings, the lower portion of foot-piece Ais shown provided with radial wings a a', which are arranged at right angles to each other and extend below the socket, forming anchor-plates for keeping the socket in a vertical position. The bore ofthesoeketispreferably cylindrical, and the post B,which is supported by the socket, is provided with a tubular extension, b,which is driven into the lower end of the post and projects beyond the end of the post sufficiently to give it a firm bearing in the socket A. The lower end of the post is provided with a ferrule, C, which is driven onto the lower end of the post to strengthen it and prevent it from splitting.
The foot-piece A, with its wings a a, is set in the ground in the same manner as an ordinary post, with the upper end of the socket even with theground or a short distance above the ground-level.
The foot-piece A is preferably made of castiron, and when set iirmly in the ground requires no renewal or removal. The posts B may be removed from the sockets and replaced whenever necessary.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the wood post B and the foot-piece A, having a socket in its upper end, ofthe tubular met-al connecting-piece b, which is inserted and held firmly in the end of the post and tits somewhat loosely in the said socket, whereby the post is adapted to be readily attached to and removed from the footpiece, as specified.
SILAS JASPER SAXON. VILLAM HARTFORD JAMES.
